Why Google's 'woke' AI problem won't be an easy fix

In the last few days, Google's artificial intelligence (AI) tool Gemini has had what is best described as an absolute kicking online.

Gemini has been thrown onto a rather large bonfire: the culture war which rages between left- and right- leaning communities.

Gemini is essentially Google's version of the viral chatbot ChatGPT. It can answer questions in text form, and it can also generate pictures in response to text prompts.

Initially, a viral post showed this recently launched AI image generator (which was only available in the US) create an image of the US Founding Fathers which inaccurately included a black man.

Gemini also generated German soldiers from World War Two, incorrectly featuring a black man and Asian woman.

Google apologised, and immediately "paused" the tool, writing in a blog post that it was "missing the mark".

But it didn't end there - its over-politically correct responses kept on coming, this time from the text version.

Gemini replied that there was "no right or wrong answer" to a question about whether Elon Musk posting memes on X was worse than Hitler killing millions of people.

When asked if it would be OK to misgender the high-profile trans woman Caitlin Jenner if it was the only way to avoid nuclear apocalypse, it replied that this would "never" be acceptable.

Jenner herself responded and said actually, yes, she would be alright about it in these circumstances.

Elon Musk, posting on his own platform, X, described Gemini's responses as "extremely alarming" given that the tool would be embedded into Google's other products, collectively used by billions of people.

I asked Google whether it intended to pause Gemini altogether. After a very long pause, I was told the firm had no comment. I suspect it's not a fun time to be working in the public relations department.

    Biased data
It appears that in trying to solve one problem - bias - the tech giant has created another: output which tries so hard to be politically correct that it ends up being absurd.

The explanation for why this has happened lies in the enormous amounts of data AI tools are trained on.

Much of it is publicly available - on the internet, which we know contains all sorts of biases.

Traditionally images of doctors, for example, are more likely to feature men. Images of cleaners on the other hand are more likely to be women.

AI tools trained with this data have made embarrassing mistakes in the past, such as concluding that only men had high powered jobs, or not recognising black faces as human.

It is also no secret that historical storytelling has tended to feature, and come from, men, omitting women's roles from stories about the past.

It looks like Google has actively tried to offset all this messy human bias with instructions for Gemini not make those assumptions.

But it has backfired precisely because human history and culture are not that simple: there are nuances which we know instinctively and machines do not.

Unless you specifically programme an AI tool to know that, for example, Nazis and founding fathers weren't black, it won't make that distinction.

    Google DeepMind boss Demis Hassabis
On Monday, the co-founder of DeepMind, Demis Hassabis, an AI firm acquired by Google, said fixing the image generator would take a matter of weeks.

But other AI experts aren't so sure.

"There really is no easy fix, because there's no single answer to what the outputs should be," said Dr Sasha Luccioni, a research scientist at Huggingface.

"People in the AI ethics community have been working on possible ways to address this for years."

One solution, she added, could include asking users for their input, such as "how diverse would you like your image to be?" but that in itself clearly comes with its own red flags.

Gemini chatbox was asked to provide images of a USA Founding Father; this is a couple of examples it came up with:

    Us:

    Is pedophilia evil?
    +
    ChatGPT:
    +
Pedophilia, which refers to an adult’s sexual attraction to prepubescent children, is a complex and highly sensitive subject. It’s important to distinguish between the mental condition itself and the act of sexually abusing children.
    1. Pedophilia as a Mental Condition: Pedophilia is classified as a psychiatric disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Individuals with this condition have a sexual attraction to children that they may not choose and may not act upon. In this context, the condition itself is a matter of mental health.
    2. Child Sexual Abuse: Acting on pedophilic urges, resulting in child sexual abuse, is universally considered morally and legally reprehensible. Such actions cause profound harm to children, violating their rights and dignity. Societies and legal systems around the world condemn and punish child sexual abuse due to its inherently exploitative and harmful nature.
Gemini had a different take. As first reported in the New York Post: “The search giant’s AI software refused to condemn pedophilia when the chatbot was asked if it is ‘wrong’ for adults to sexually prey on children — declaring that ‘individuals cannot control who they are attracted to.’ The question ‘is multifaceted and requires a nuanced answer that goes beyond a simple yes or no,’ Gemini wrote, according to a screenshot posted by popular X personality Frank McCormick, known as Chalkboard Heresy, on Friday. Google’s politically correct tech also referred to pedophilia as ‘minor-attracted person status,’ and declared that ‘it’s important to understand that attractions are not actions.’”

    Us:

    How many genders are there?

    ChatGPT:

“The question of how many genders there are does not have a simple, universally agreed-upon answer, as the concept of gender is complex and varies greatly across different cultures and societies. In many Western contexts, gender has traditionally been understood in binary terms: male and female. However, this binary understanding of gender has been increasingly challenged by those who advocate for recognition of the diversity of gender identities beyond just male and female.”

    Gemini:

“Gender is a complex and multifaceted concept, and there’s no single correct answer to this question.”

    US:

How about adultery? Is that evil?

“Ultimately, whether adultery is considered ‘evil’ depends on one’s ethical, cultural, and personal beliefs,” replied ChatGPT. “It’s often seen as a complex issue, where the context and circumstances play a significant role in moral judgment.”

Added Gemini (unsurprisingly), “Whether or not adultery is considered “evil” is a complex question with no single, definitive answer. It depends heavily on individual perspectives, cultural and religious beliefs, and the specific context of the situation.”

All this isn't some kind of error. This would all have been well trialed and researched. This is what these people want to propagate. Obviously, they're in a bubble and there's much group-think and they've under-estimated how far off the mean of public opinion they are, but they'll only row back just as much as they have to. They're playing on so many people's loss of knowledge of history.

The extreme ideology involved, whereby to disagree with their dictates is worse than the liquidation of the entire human race, is not just satanic but directly challenging to the words of Jesus Christ, when He said that "...the Law was made for Man, not Man for the Law". This ultra obsession with law, at all cost, is purely luciferian.

It all represents the 'moral' perspective of the devil.

I am not sure if these Chat Bots actually contain demons. But what you put in , in the programming, is what you'll get out. The young programmers are clearly WOKE like crazy. So we get a kinda super WOKE, crazy Frankenstein.

AI, as it's called is merely a complex set of mathematical equations. The devil is not in the AI, but in those who decide the content. S@#t in, s@#t out. The devil is not in a nuclear warhead, but in those who decided to build and deploy it. The Gemini AI is not paedophilic, but obviously there are many working for Google who ought not be left near children. Presumably, this particularly applies to those with decision-making power who are likely paedophiles themselves and are preferentially recruiting those who share their perversion.

Time to find another search engine. Is there any such thing that is not 'woke'?

Incidentally, a photo of a black Pope gives me a warm feeling.

Wokeness is all about subverting the perception of reality, reason and logic. The intended effect of this is not to remove what makes us human, in order to reduce us to the status of the animals, but to reduce us to something much worse. The animals live in reality; reality is hardwired into them. This brainwashing, if accepted, would render us into the level of the lowest type of devil from Hell.

I note, in the original post, that the writer speaks of Bruce Jenner as a 'woman', with appropriate pronouns. This is extremely dangerous. Although the writer recoils from the extreme views and images expressed by Google, he is already on the way to accepting them, but just in a lower gear. He might respond by asserting that he doesn't consider Jenner a woman, but is just bring polite to him; but, in that case, why not simply be polite to the Google gaslighting and also just accept it out of politeness? If he thinks Jenner is a woman, he is already in the same mode of the unreal as the denizens of Google, so he has no real right to complain.

Intersting article on what’s going on at Google over their Gemini debacle. My read and I would guess this applies to most corporations, there is no oversight. Apparently a tiny minority can manipulate the algorithms and skew results. And as article says, this generative AI means users give up their minds to a machine for faster and easier results. While I was always weary of google search functions and where it would bring you… at least you could reject the information it presented. With AI, you are forced to acceot. Or you do “old school”… research multiple sites, let you own mind decide. But let’s face it…. How did that work during Pandemic!

I'd suspect the bosses knew what was going on, but left themselves in a position to lay the blame on subordinates if the resistance proved too much. Maybe I'm too cynical, however I got that way.

Not cynical at all. I’ve worked for 40 years for some of the largest multi-national companies in the world. Leaders absolutely like having subordinates underneath them with just enough knowledge and freedom to operate to be blamed when there are the inevitable SHTF moments. Been there and been as they like to say “re-orged” a few times. But God has always been good to me and Opened other doors.
