What do you think of modern-day public flaggelants?

    santo tomas in colombia, Taxco in mexico, the philippines.. Many countries today feature processions of men (and women!) whipping themselves to blood in public Holy Week processions. in mexico they even tie themselves to cacti plants!
    I know the original flagelantes were banned by the church ,even if the reason wasn't specifically the flogging? Are these types of devotion spiritual heroism, or more of a cultural relic or even a bad influence?
