I always loved this movie ….truly a faith filled one. and Topol was truly tremendous in the lead as the Father facing changing times. (Sounds familiar). RIP https://www.theatermania.com/new-yo...ry-chaim-topol-fiddler-on-the-roof_94949.html
God grant him rest. Fiddler on the Roof was a wonderful movie that I could watch over and over. He also played Berel Jastrow in the mini series Winds of War and War and Remembrance. He was a superior actor.
Apparently life in the little Jewish villages was appalling and not at all as it was in the film. But at least they had each other.
I do not know much about this and I have not watched the film. But at the back of my mind I read somewhere that the film was based upon a Jewish village or settlement not to far West of Kiev (personally I prefer Kiev to Kyiv). I think it corresponds to Irpin in modern Kiev. That is why I was watching to see how the Russians might deal with that area when they launched their invasion from the North. It seems the Russians encountered very strong resistance around Irpin. It is close to the town of Bucha which has been claimed to be the site of a war-crime massacre by the Russians. I am not implying anything by these observations. I was just trying to discern what might be going on in this area and whether the Russians were aware of this at the time.
To me this film was about family and as kids get older the acknowledgement that as parents we let go a bit and pray they hold onto their faith. It’s a bit of a bittersweet film… for in the end they are mostly separated. But, as Tevye (Topol character) throughout the film shows his trust and relationship with God. I guess I relate to it. Plus it is wholesome and enjoyable!
Brings back fond memories. Fiddler on the Roof was my first Broadway play, and has remained my favorite to this day. My parents brought me on summer vacation when I was about 12 years old. I was totally mesmerized, what a magnificent play.
Yes, it was my first Broadway play also. My favorite line in the play was “Would it spoil some vast eternal plan— if I were a wealthy man?”
