Embassies are located usually in the capital city of each country in world. So in this case the Russian embassy in Italy is located in Rome. Under international law, an embassy is considered sovereign territory - as if you were physically in that country. So again in this case, the Pope visiting the Russian embassy in Rome was technically entering Russian soil. Hope that helps.
