Ok guys Ive exhausted my brian.... Looks like we have grown very big over the past few years and our database is bigger than what our hosting package allows. Ive taken the decision and tried to reduce our data by deleting old uploaded images to go through them manually would take about a year... My next step would be to delete post and threads over 4 years old.. the other option is to move to another host and a dedicated server but the price comes in at £60 a month which is an insane price to pay.. your thoughts please...
Will deleting the old images be sufficient or will you then have to also delete old threads over 4 years old? I’m guessing the old images will be sufficient so yes do that but let’s try to save the old threads. There’s some very useful information in those old threads which will be very useful going forward
Is it possible for forum members to delete their own photos from the threads they posted on or is that only something an administrator can do? If this is possible perhaps everyone who posted a pic could help you out and delete their own pics.
yes I agree Id rather not delete anything...Im working on a fix so I don't have to delete anything, Ive identified a very large file on the database but the biggest problem with hosts providers is they set time limits whilst working on databases so like you have 120 seconds to run fixes and if you time out its start all over again...one option is to extract the database and work on it then upload it again...unfortunately I dont have a copy of MySQL so cant do that (MySQL) is the software database used by the host provider..
Good morning John. I am fine with whatever solution you deem necessary for the good of the forum. And thank you!
Here's a link to a free community version of MySQL, mabye it contains the tools you need: https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/ I found this blog with some step by step instructions: https://phoenixnap.com/kb/how-to-backup-restore-a-mysql-database If no go let me know and I'll try my web developer, he may have the tools you need to manage this
bottom line is our server host only allows 1GB of database ..I dont have a lot to work with ...there's 373,000 posts to start with .
ok hopefully I found a bit of time with my fix...looks like the search index on the data base is getting hammered from somewhere I think maybe external..Ive removed the search function on the site for now to see how we go..
genius. you can just use google to search the site too. If anybody wants to do this go to google.com and type: site:motheofgod.com then whatever you're searching so to search for La Palma posts: site:motheofgod.com La Palma
John, I support any decision you need to make. You’re the one operating this for everyone, so do technically whatever you need to do…IMO.
If you did have to delete some stuff I am sure there is a way to download a compressed file of all posts and store that away, I actually did that a few years ago for Padraig. 60 per month seem very expensive, could there be better value. I really do take this forum for granted and don't realise all the work behind the scene. I am happy to donate a few bob if needs be.
