This is only my personal opinion, but I strongly suspect many people are being granted very strong mystical graces to help them through these times. Recently, looking at people in or near Churches I can just sense this; that they are seeing and understanding things they never did before. That they are in a real sense , 'Waking up', as though from some deep, deep sleep. “I will pour out my Spirit on all people” Joel (2:28)
Yes, Padraig, any Catholic who seeks to go beyond Holy Mass on Sunday, occasional Confession, and money in the collection, will be offered numerous graces by the Holy Spirit. One way to gauge if your going in the right direction is an increase in temptations from the devil. He freaks out when one awakens from a spiritual slumber. However, perseverance is the key because JoeJerk will also throw "blessings" to one who has begun a path of spiritual awakening in order to lure them back to the wide path. It reminds me a bit of Grima Wormtongue in Lord of the Rings. He lied to King Theoden so much he put him under a spell. We were lied to so much we fell asleep. Grima getting thrown out on his ass reminds me of Roe vs Wade getting flung.
I agree with you but I would be more specific. I think the great chasm in theology wasn't necessarily the divide between conservative and liberal. To me, the Big Error is the false doctrine of Universal Salvation. Remove negative consequences and all that can logically remain is 'Do as you will'. It's not untrue that the Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, maybe the only bit of wisdom most of us can aspire to. This Hans Urs von Balthasar fellow is generally credited as a bulwark against liberal theology, but he was also the primary proponent of Universalism. I know I'm repeating myself, but in his book 'Will Many be Saved?', Ralph Martin absolutely excoriates von Balthasar for this heresy, being far more severe on him than upon the notorious liberal, Karl Rahner. Unfortunately, with this error having taken hold, things in the Church have become a free-for-all. The proponents either are atheists or Universalists and neither group has any fear of Eternal Damnation. They neither fear man nor God, a very dangerous kind of being.
Perseverance, and practicing/ learning to defend oneself from the onslaught. No easy thing, but possible with God's grace and humility. I can honestly say I never really understood what it meant to "practice one's faith" until a few years ago....... St. Francis called the demons God's police. They've been very busy convincing people they, along with their "chief", don't exist....It's a shock to wake up and find that they in fact do exist. God's great Mercy always lifts us up though, when we fall.
I so look forward to being in prison again. I never prayed better nor felt closer to God than when I was in prison in solitary confinement. Leave me a pair of rosary beads and I will already be in heaven. If not, ten fingers will more than do to count the , 'Aves'. We must prepare for persecution, I can smell it in the air.

Beyond False Theologians of the further past, The Immediate Causes of especially the earlier 1970's and onwards - were and are - === The False Shepherd theologians and teachers who easily misled many of the Flock into accepting an AntiTradition spirit - which was a figurative and literal borrow from the secular Global Counter-Cultural Revolution of the latter 1960's! The Reason WHY? those False Teachers achieve(d) such outstanding success with Tridentine-Mass Going Catholics? - is rarely readily acceptable. It was because of the Combo of Decades of a False Attitude of Complacency leading to a deep-rooted belief in an Invincible Visible Church - which was based upon its Golden Era Constantly Growing Glowing Stats.. .... Combined with a certain (hold on) Ignorance of Sacred Scriptures AND the Church's Magisterium .. I was there.. an adult in the 1960's and I could go on and on speaking of the face to face Apostasy-Teachings which reached my ears .. and of a Legion of Abuses witnessed in Action.. The average well-meaning Catholic? refused to accept any sense of PROBLEM in the Church, until, sometimes, as late as the earlyish 1990's. + _
