But I am a grump! I think it is part of getting older. I hear a colder harder nastier part in me commenting on others and events , but I laugh at it and say, 'That is the grump talking'. It is funny really so long as I do not give into it and take it too seriously. For instance I watched a train the other day and thought the driver was driving it too slow and got the grump. ..then I thought to myself, 'Why what do you know about driving trains you old grump, you!!'. Then I burst out laughing at myself. So I find I have to be careful in case my thoughts on things are part of the new, older much more grumpy me. I have to compensate by always being ready to have a good hard laugh at myself. Like I say I think it is just part of growing ancient and to be expected. Make me thoughtful but not moody; helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom it seems a pity not to use it all, but Thou knowest Lord, that I want a few friends at the end. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details; give me wings to get to the point. Seal my lips on my aches and pains. They are increasing and love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of other's pains, but help me to endure them with patience. I dare not ask for improved memory, but for a growing humility and a lessening cocksureness when my memory seems to clash with the memories of others. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a saint-some of them are so hard to live with-but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the Devil. Actually the Code of Canon Law says it would be ok to receive in that situation, even if you haven't fasted. ยง3.
