At RCF, we were told by a nurse that his pancreatic cancer was from aids. Steven Cook also died of aids. He never recanted his story, just said he could not trust his memory. It was all true.

Brian, Thank you for posting this. I recognize a few of the names on this list including Joseph Shaw the spokesman for the Filial Correction, Father Z, Father John Hunwicke and Father Gerald Murray to name a few. This has me wondering if Father Murray will discuss this on the World Over tonight.

I found the following article discussing another injustice, https://onepeterfive.com/catholic-scholars-react-dismissal-josef-seifert-exhortation-critique/ , Josef Seifert is also included on the above list.

Steven Cook said that his recollection of Cardinal Bernardin abusing him happened under hypnosis, that he couldn't rely on his memory and that he hadn't received or been promised a reward for withdrawing his accusation. Did anyone ever find out for sure that Cardinal Bernardin paid him off?

Reading the attached, it appears that Cardinal Cupich believes Pope Francis to be very much in the mould of Cardinal Bernardin: https://international.la-croix.com/news/the-controversial-legacy-of-cardinal-bernardin/5215# Of course, Cardinal Cupich was also a fan of Cardinal McCarrick. I wonder if that's still the case? Perhaps not in public.

Newspaper reports and his Wikipedia page depict Cardinal Bernardin as the main instigator of a change in the Church's dealing with abuse allegations. That doesn't stand up against a deposition given by a Canon Lawyer, Fr. Thomas Doyle, who co-authored a report recommending that the Church adopt a compassionate approach towards families of children claiming they had been abused by priests: https://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/the-sins-of-the-fathers/Content?oid=877641

George Weigel wasn't an admirer of Cardinal Bernardin, writing this in 2011: https://www.firstthings.com/article/2011/02/the-end-of-the-bernardin-era The Bishop Hallinan referred to by Weigel as Bernardin's mentor was a new name to me. Reading his Wikipedia page, Bishop Hallinan appears to have been an advocate of the "spirit of Vatican 11", and Cardinal Bernardin was his protege. The poor man died from hepatitis at only age 57. Lord have mercy on his soul. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_John_Hallinan
