What is so scary is that they get suckered in before they realize what they've taken on and then if they want out it isn't always possible to get extricated from it.

Of course the Cardinal of Chicago in real time was dying of cancer. Also the scene on the road in the pouring rain where Fr Slattery stops at a terrible car crash and administers the last rites to a dying priest--who confessed to being a Satanist. So many eye opening moments. Malachi Martin has been proved prescient again and again.
