    Friday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 399

    Reading 1 Jer 3:14-17
    Return, rebellious children, says the LORD,
    for I am your Master;
    I will take you, one from a city, two from a clan,
    and bring you to Zion.
    I will appoint over you shepherds after my own heart,
    who will shepherd you wisely and prudently.
    When you multiply and become fruitful in the land,
    says the LORD,
    They will in those days no longer say,
    “The ark of the covenant of the LORD!”
    They will no longer think of it, or remember it,
    or miss it, or make another.

    At that time they will call Jerusalem the LORD’s throne;
    there all nations will be gathered together
    to honor the name of the LORD at Jerusalem,
    and they will walk no longer in their hardhearted wickedness.

    Responsorial Psalm Jer 31:10, 11-12abcd, 13
    R. (see 10d) The Lord will guard us as a shepherd guards his flock.
    Hear the word of the LORD, O nations,
    proclaim it on distant isles, and say:
    He who scattered Israel, now gathers them together,
    he guards them as a shepherd his flock.
    R. The Lord will guard us as a shepherd guards his flock.
    The LORD shall ransom Jacob,
    he shall redeem him from the hand of his conqueror.
    Shouting, they shall mount the heights of Zion,
    they shall come streaming to the LORD’s blessings:
    The grain, the wine, and the oil,
    the sheep and the oxen.
    R. The Lord will guard us as a shepherd guards his flock.
    Then the virgins shall make merry and dance,
    and young men and old as well.
    I will turn their mourning into joy,
    I will console and gladden them after their sorrows.
    R. The Lord will guard us as a shepherd guards his flock.

    Alleluia See Lk 8:15
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Blessed are they who have kept the word with a generous heart
    and yield a harvest through perseverance.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 13:18-23
    Jesus said to his disciples:
    “Hear the parable of the sower.
    The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the Kingdom
    without understanding it,
    and the Evil One comes and steals away
    what was sown in his heart.
    The seed sown on rocky ground
    is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy.
    But he has no root and lasts only for a time.
    When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word,
    he immediately falls away.
    The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word,
    but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word
    and it bears no fruit.
    But the seed sown on rich soil
    is the one who hears the word and understands it,
    who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”

    Feast day of Saint Christina the Astonishing or also known as Christina Mirabilis, Virgin, died July 24, 1224, Belgium
    Christina was born to a religious family, the youngest of three daughters. After being orphaned at the age of fifteen, she was raised by her older sisters and worked taking the herds to pasture. She suffered a massive seizure when she was 21. Her condition was so severe that witnesses assumed she had died. A funeral was held, but during the service, "she arose full of vigor, stupefying with amazement the whole city of Sint-Truiden, which had witnessed this wonder. She levitated up to the rafters. Ordered down by the priest, she landed on the altar. She related that she had witnessed Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. She said that as soon as her soul was separated from her body, angels conducted it to a very gloomy place, entirely filled with souls whose torments endured there were such that it was impossible to describe. She claimed that she had been offered a choice either to remain there or return to earth to perform penance to deliver souls from Purgatory. Christina agreed to return to earthly life with a ministry to pray for souls in purgatory. Christina renounced all comforts of life, reduced herself to extreme destitution, dressed in rags, and not content with that, she eagerly sought all that could cause her suffering. At first, she fled human contact. She could not stand the odor of other people because she could smell the sin in them, and would climb trees or buildings, hide in ovens or cupboards, or simply levitate to avoid contact. People suspected Christina of being possessed, so she was jailed. Upon her release, she continued her practice of extreme penance.

    Thomas of Cantimpré, then a canon regular who was a professor of theology, wrote a report eight years after her death, based on accounts of those who knew her. Cardinal Jacques de Vitry, who met with her, said that she would throw herself into burning furnaces and there suffered great tortures for extended times, uttering frightful cries, yet coming forth with no sign of burns upon her. She plunged into the freezing water of the river for hours, and allowed herself to be dragged under water by a mill wheel, though she never sustained injury. What observers did not see was that Christina then led the souls of the recently dead to purgatory, and those in purgatory to paradise during her ecstasies.

    People who knew her were divided in their opinions: she was a holy woman, touched of God, and that her actions and torments were simulations of the experiences of the souls in purgatory or she was suffering the torments of devils or she was flatly insane. However, the prioress of Saint Catherine’s convent testified that no matter how bizarre or excessive Christina’s reported actions, she was always completely obedient to the orders of the prioresses of the convent. After being incarcerated a second time, she moderated her approach somewhat, upon her release. Christina died at the Dominican Monastery of Saint Catherine in Sint-Truiden, of natural causes, aged 74.

    St. Robert Bellarmine wrote of Christina: "The sufferings of this admirable virgin were not hidden. Every one could see that she was in the midst of the flames without being consumed, and covered with wounds, every trace of which disappeared a few moments afterwards. But more than this was the marvelous life she led for forty-two years after she was raised from the dead, God clearly showing that the wonders wrought in her by virtue from on high. The striking conversions which she effected, and the evident miracles which occurred after her death, manifestly proved the finger of God, and the truth of that which she had revealed concerning the other life."

    Feast of Saint James, Apostle
    Lectionary: 605

    Reading 1 2 Cor 4:7-15
    Brothers and sisters:
    We hold this treasure in earthen vessels,
    that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us.
    We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained;
    perplexed, but not driven to despair;
    persecuted, but not abandoned;
    struck down, but not destroyed;
    always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus,
    so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body.
    For we who live are constantly being given up to death
    for the sake of Jesus,
    so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

    So death is at work in us, but life in you.
    Since, then, we have the same spirit of faith,
    according to what is written, I believed, therefore I spoke,
    we too believe and therefore speak,
    knowing that the one who raised the Lord Jesus
    will raise us also with Jesus
    and place us with you in his presence.
    Everything indeed is for you,
    so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more and more people
    may cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God.

    Responsorial Psalm 126:1bc-2ab, 2cd-3, 4-5, 6
    R. (5) Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.
    When the LORD brought back the captives of Zion,
    we were like men dreaming.
    Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
    and our tongue with rejoicing.
    R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.
    Then they said among the nations,
    “The LORD has done great things for them.”
    The LORD has done great things for us;
    we are glad indeed.
    R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.
    Restore our fortunes, O LORD,
    like the torrents in the southern desert.
    Those that sow in tears
    shall reap rejoicing.
    R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.
    Although they go forth weeping,
    carrying the seed to be sown,
    They shall come back rejoicing,
    carrying their sheaves.
    R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.

    Alleluia See Jn 15:16
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    I chose you from the world,
    to go and bear fruit that will last, says the Lord.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 20:20-28
    The mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons
    and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.
    He said to her,
    “What do you wish?”
    She answered him,
    “Command that these two sons of mine sit,
    one at your right and the other at your left, in your Kingdom.”
    Jesus said in reply,
    “You do not know what you are asking.
    Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?”
    They said to him, “We can.”
    He replied,
    “My chalice you will indeed drink,
    but to sit at my right and at my left, this is not mine to give
    but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
    When the ten heard this,
    they became indignant at the two brothers.
    But Jesus summoned them and said,
    “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,
    and the great ones make their authority over them felt.
    But it shall not be so among you.
    Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
    whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
    Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served
    but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

    Feast day of Saint James the Greater, Apostle, died 44, patron of Spain
    James the Great also known as James, son of Zebedee or as Saint James the Greater was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus according to the New Testament. James is described as one of the first disciples to join Jesus. The Gospels say that James and John were with their father by the seashore when Jesus called them to follow him. Saint James is the patron saint of Spain and, according to tradition, his remains are held in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.

    Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 109

    Reading 1 1 Kgs 3:5, 7-12
    The LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream at night.
    God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.”
    Solomon answered:
    “O LORD, my God, you have made me, your servant, king
    to succeed my father David;
    but I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act.
    I serve you in the midst of the people whom you have chosen,
    a people so vast that it cannot be numbered or counted.
    Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart
    to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong.
    For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?”

    The LORD was pleased that Solomon made this request.
    So God said to him:
    “Because you have asked for this—
    not for a long life for yourself,
    nor for riches,
    nor for the life of your enemies,
    but for understanding so that you may know what is right—
    I do as you requested.
    I give you a heart so wise and understanding
    that there has never been anyone like you up to now,
    and after you there will come no one to equal you.”

    Responsorial Psalm Ps 119:57, 72, 76-77, 127-128, 129-130
    R. (97a) Lord, I love your commands.
    I have said, O LORD, that my part
    is to keep your words.
    The law of your mouth is to me more precious
    than thousands of gold and silver pieces.
    R. Lord, I love your commands.
    Let your kindness comfort me
    according to your promise to your servants.
    Let your compassion come to me that I may live,
    for your law is my delight.
    R. Lord, I love your commands.
    For I love your command
    more than gold, however fine.
    For in all your precepts I go forward;
    every false way I hate.
    R. Lord, I love your commands.
    Wonderful are your decrees;
    therefore I observe them.
    The revelation of your words sheds light,
    giving understanding to the simple.
    R. Lord, I love your commands.

    Reading 2 Rom 8:28-30
    Brothers and sisters:
    We know that all things work for good for those who love God,
    who are called according to his purpose.
    For those he foreknew he also predestined
    to be conformed to the image of his Son,
    so that he might be the firstborn
    among many brothers and sisters.
    And those he predestined he also called;
    and those he called he also justified;
    and those he justified he also glorified.

    Alleluia Cf. Mt 11:25
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth;
    for you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 13:44-52 or 13:44-46
    Jesus said to his disciples:
    “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field,
    which a person finds and hides again,
    and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
    Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
    searching for fine pearls.
    When he finds a pearl of great price,
    he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.
    Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea,
    which collects fish of every kind.
    When it is full they haul it ashore
    and sit down to put what is good into buckets.
    What is bad they throw away.
    Thus it will be at the end of the age.
    The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous
    and throw them into the fiery furnace,
    where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.

    “Do you understand all these things?”
    They answered, “Yes.”
    And he replied,
    “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven
    is like the head of a household
    who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”

    or

    Jesus said to his disciples:
    “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field,
    which a person finds and hides again,
    and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
    Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
    searching for fine pearls.
    When he finds a pearl of great price,
    he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.”

    Feast day of Saint Joachim and Saint Ann, parents of Mary, grandparents of Jesus, patron saints of grandparents
    Information concerning their lives and names is found in the 2nd-century Protevangelium of James (“First Gospel of James”) and the 3rd-century Evangelium de nativitate Mariae (“Gospel of the Nativity of Mary”). According to these noncanonical sources, Anne (Hebrew: Ḥannah) was born in Bethlehem in Judaea. She married Joachim, and, although they shared a wealthy and devout life at Nazareth, they eventually lamented their childlessness. Joachim, reproached at the Temple for his sterility, retreated into the countryside to pray, while Anne, grieved by his disappearance and by her barrenness, solemnly promised God that, if given a child, she would dedicate it to the Lord’s service. Both received the vision of an angel, who announced that Anne would conceive and bear a most wondrous child. The couple rejoiced at the birth of their daughter, whom Anne named Mary. When the child was three years old, Joachim and Anne, in fulfillment of her divine promise, brought Mary to the Temple of Jerusalem, where they left her to be brought up.

    Reading 1 Jer 13:1-11
    The LORD said to me: Go buy yourself a linen loincloth;
    wear it on your loins, but do not put it in water.
    I bought the loincloth, as the LORD commanded, and put it on.
    A second time the word of the LORD came to me thus:
    Take the loincloth which you bought and are wearing,
    and go now to the Parath;
    there hide it in a cleft of the rock.
    Obedient to the LORD’s command, I went to the Parath
    and buried the loincloth.
    After a long interval, the LORD said to me:
    Go now to the Parath and fetch the loincloth
    which I told you to hide there.
    Again I went to the Parath, sought out and took the loincloth
    from the place where I had hid it.
    But it was rotted, good for nothing!
    Then the message came to me from the LORD:
    Thus says the LORD:
    So also I will allow the pride of Judah to rot,
    the great pride of Jerusalem.
    This wicked people who refuse to obey my words,
    who walk in the stubbornness of their hearts,
    and follow strange gods to serve and adore them,
    shall be like this loincloth which is good for nothing.
    For, as close as the loincloth clings to a man’s loins,
    so had I made the whole house of Israel
    and the whole house of Judah cling to me, says the LORD;
    to be my people, my renown, my praise, my beauty.
    But they did not listen.

    Responsorial Psalm Deuteronomy 32:18-19, 20, 21
    R. (see 18a) You have forgotten God who gave you birth.
    You were unmindful of the Rock that begot you,
    You forgot the God who gave you birth.
    When the LORD saw this, he was filled with loathing
    and anger toward his sons and daughters.
    R. You have forgotten God who gave you birth.
    “I will hide my face from them,” he said,
    “and see what will then become of them.
    What a fickle race they are,
    sons with no loyalty in them!”
    R. You have forgotten God who gave you birth.
    “Since they have provoked me with their ‘no-god’
    and angered me with their vain idols,
    I will provoke them with a ‘no-people’;
    with a foolish nation I will anger them.”
    R. You have forgotten God who gave you birth.

    Alleluia Jas 1:18
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    The Father willed to give us birth by the word of truth
    that we may be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 13:31-35
    Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds.
    “The Kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed
    that a person took and sowed in a field.
    It is the smallest of all the seeds,
    yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants.
    It becomes a large bush,
    and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.’”

    He spoke to them another parable.
    “The Kingdom of heaven is like yeast
    that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour
    until the whole batch was leavened.”

    All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables.
    He spoke to them only in parables,
    to fulfill what had been said through the prophet:

    I will open my mouth in parables,
    I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation
    of the world.

    Feast of Saint Nathalia, Saint Aurelius, Saint Liliosa, Saint Felix and Saint George, Martyrs, died 852
    During the 8th century, Mohammedans ruled Cordoba, Spain, and initiated a persecution of the Chrisitans. Nathalia and Aurelius were converted Moslems who decided to practice the faith openly. After setting aside enough money to take care of their daughter’s future, poor and practiced penance and devotion.

    Their example proved to be an inspiration for a relative of Aurelius named Felix and his wife Liliosa, who had been practicing her faith in secret. They joined Nathalia and Aurelius in visiting and ministering to the Christians in prison.

    Felix and Liliosa, Nathalia and Aurelius were quickly arrested and cast into prison along with a deacon, George, a monk from Palestine who belonged to the monastery of St. Sabas in Jerusalem and had toured Egypt and Europe in search of alms for his house. The two couples were condemned to death for converting from Islam. George was offered acquittal as a foreigner, but he preferred to throw in his lot with the others. On July 27, 852, these saintly followers of Christ were martyred.
    Holy martyrs, please pray for us.

    Tuesday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 402

    Reading 1 Jer 14:17-22
    Let my eyes stream with tears
    day and night, without rest,
    Over the great destruction which overwhelms
    the virgin daughter of my people,
    over her incurable wound.
    If I walk out into the field,
    look! those slain by the sword;
    If I enter the city,
    look! those consumed by hunger.
    Even the prophet and the priest
    forage in a land they know not.

    Have you cast Judah off completely?
    Is Zion loathsome to you?
    Why have you struck us a blow
    that cannot be healed?
    We wait for peace, to no avail;
    for a time of healing, but terror comes instead.
    We recognize, O LORD, our wickedness,
    the guilt of our fathers;
    that we have sinned against you.
    For your name’s sake spurn us not,
    disgrace not the throne of your glory;
    remember your covenant with us, and break it not.
    Among the nations’ idols is there any that gives rain?
    Or can the mere heavens send showers?
    Is it not you alone, O LORD,
    our God, to whom we look?
    You alone have done all these things.

    Responsorial Psalm 79:8, 9, 11 and 13
    R. (9) For the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us.
    Remember not against us the iniquities of the past;
    may your compassion quickly come to us,
    for we are brought very low.
    R. For the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us.
    Help us, O God our savior,
    because of the glory of your name;
    Deliver us and pardon our sins
    for your name’s sake.
    R. For the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us.
    Let the prisoners’ sighing come before you;
    with your great power free those doomed to death.
    Then we, your people and the sheep of your pasture,
    will give thanks to you forever;
    through all generations we will declare your praise.
    R. For the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us.

    Alleluia
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower;
    all who come to him will live for ever.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 13:36-43
    Jesus dismissed the crowds and went into the house.
    His disciples approached him and said,
    “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”
    He said in reply, “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man,
    the field is the world, the good seed the children of the Kingdom.
    The weeds are the children of the Evil One,
    and the enemy who sows them is the Devil.
    The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
    Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire,
    so will it be at the end of the age.
    The Son of Man will send his angels,
    and they will collect out of his Kingdom
    all who cause others to sin and all evildoers.
    They will throw them into the fiery furnace,
    where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
    Then the righteous will shine like the sun
    in the Kingdom of their Father.
    Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

    El Salvador is celebrates July 28th as the feast day of Our Lady of Peace, the Marian dedication whose image found in a box abandoned at sea was decisive for the pacification of the country, stirred by revolts among the population in 1682.

    In January 1833, when the country was again agitated by confrontations, now between the so-called Monualcos and Migueleños, the Virgin
    performed another miracle.

    The victorious side under the command of Colonel Benítez, who, together with his troops, entered the city of San Miguel, instead of retaliating, placed the blessed image in the churchyard and solemnly swore at the feet of Mary not to hold grudges and erase the hatred of the hearts so that peace and reconciliation reigns between the people.
    For this reason they gave the image the beautiful title of Our Lady of La Paz. It is carved from dressed wood, with an embroidery of the national coat of arms on its white skirt. In her left arm she carries the Child Jesus and in her right hand a gold palm in memory of the eruption of the Chaparrastique volcano in 1787, which threatened to plunge the city into a sea of lava.

    It is said that when the image of Our Lady of Peace was placed on the main door of the Cathedral, at that very moment the strong lava flow
    changed direction, moving away from the city. At the exact point where the lava twisted the course there is a town called "Miracle of Peace".

    Benedict XV granted the canonical coronation of the image, which took place on November 21, 1921. On October 10, 1966, Pope Paul VI, through the Sacred Consecration of Rites, constituted and declared perpetually, Our Lady of Peace, Principal Patron of the Republic of El Salvador, with all the corresponding liturgical honors and privileges.

    Memorial of Saint Martha
    Lectionary: 403/607

    Reading 1 Jer 15:10, 16-21
    Woe to me, mother, that you gave me birth!
    a man of strife and contention to all the land!
    I neither borrow nor lend,
    yet all curse me.
    When I found your words, I devoured them;
    they became my joy and the happiness of my heart,
    Because I bore your name,
    O LORD, God of hosts.
    I did not sit celebrating
    in the circle of merrymakers;
    Under the weight of your hand I sat alone
    because you filled me with indignation.
    Why is my pain continuous,
    my wound incurable, refusing to be healed?
    You have indeed become for me a treacherous brook,
    whose waters do not abide!
    Thus the LORD answered me:
    If you repent, so that I restore you,
    in my presence you shall stand;
    If you bring forth the precious without the vile,
    you shall be my mouthpiece.
    Then it shall be they who turn to you,
    and you shall not turn to them;
    And I will make you toward this people
    a solid wall of brass.
    Though they fight against you,
    they shall not prevail,
    For I am with you,
    to deliver and rescue you, says the LORD.
    I will free you from the hand of the wicked,
    and rescue you from the grasp of the violent.

    Responsorial Psalm 59:2-3, 4, 10-11, 17, 18
    R. (17d) God is my refuge on the day of distress.
    Rescue me from my enemies, O my God;
    from my adversaries defend me.
    Rescue me from evildoers;
    from bloodthirsty men save me.
    R. God is my refuge on the day of distress.
    For behold, they lie in wait for my life;
    mighty men come together against me,
    Not for any offense or sin of mine, O LORD.
    R. God is my refuge on the day of distress.
    O my strength! for you I watch;
    for you, O God, are my stronghold,
    As for my God, may his mercy go before me;
    may he show me the fall of my foes.
    R. God is my refuge on the day of distress.
    But I will sing of your strength
    and revel at dawn in your mercy;
    You have been my stronghold,
    my refuge in the day of distress.
    R. God is my refuge on the day of distress.
    O my strength! your praise will I sing;
    for you, O God, are my stronghold,
    my merciful God!
    R. God is my refuge on the day of distress.

    Alleluia Jn 8:12
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    I am the light of the world, says the Lord;
    whoever follows me will have the light of life.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Jn 11:19-27
    Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary
    to comfort them about their brother [Lazarus, who had died].
    When Martha heard that Jesus was coming,
    she went to meet him;
    but Mary sat at home.
    Martha said to Jesus,
    “Lord, if you had been here,
    my brother would not have died.
    But even now I know that whatever you ask of God,
    God will give you.”
    Jesus said to her,
    “Your brother will rise.”
    Martha said to him,
    “I know he will rise,
    in the resurrection on the last day.”
    Jesus told her,
    “I am the resurrection and the life;
    whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,
    and anyone who lives and believes in me will never die.
    Do you believe this?”
    She said to him, “Yes, Lord.
    I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God,
    the one who is coming into the world.”

    or

    Lk 10:38-42

    Jesus entered a village
    where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
    She had a sister named Mary
    who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
    Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
    “Lord, do you not care
    that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
    Tell her to help me.”
    The Lord said to her in reply,
    “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
    There is need of only one thing.
    Mary has chosen the better part
    and it will not be taken from her.”

    Feast day of Saint Martha, friend of Jesus
    We know of Martha from the Gospel readings. There is a script called the 'Golden Legend' that tells more about the life of Martha. Here is part of the Golden Legend:
    Saint Martha, hostess of our Lord Jesus Christ, was born of a royal kindred. Her father was named Syro and her mother Encharia. The father of her was duke of Syria and places maritime, and Martha with her sister lived (by the heritage of their mother) in three places, that was, the castle Magdalen, and Bethany and a part of Jerusalem. It is nowhere read that Martha ever had any husband, but she, as a noble hostess, ministered and served our Lord, and would also that her sister should serve him and help her, for she thought that all the world was not sufficient to serve such a guest.

    After the ascension of our Lord, when the disciples were departed, she with her brother Lazarus and her sister Mary, also Saint Maximin, which baptized them, and to whom they were committed of the Holy Ghost, and many others, were put into a ship, which by the conduct of our Lord they came all to Marseilles, and after came to the territory of Aquense, and there converted the people to the faith. Martha was kind of speech, and courteous and gracious in the sight of the people.

    Lectionary: 404

    Reading 1 Jer 18:1-6
    This word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
    Rise up, be off to the potter’s house;
    there I will give you my message.
    I went down to the potter’s house and there he was,
    working at the wheel.
    Whenever the object of clay which he was making
    turned out badly in his hand,
    he tried again,
    making of the clay another object of whatever sort he pleased.
    Then the word of the LORD came to me:
    Can I not do to you, house of Israel,
    as this potter has done? says the LORD.
    Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter,
    so are you in my hand, house of Israel.

    Responsorial Psalm 146:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6ab
    R. (5a) Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
    Praise the LORD, O my soul;
    I will praise the LORD all my life;
    I will sing praise to my God while I live.
    R. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
    Put not your trust in princes,
    in the sons of men, in whom there is no salvation.
    When his spirit departs he returns to his earth;
    on that day his plans perish.
    R. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
    Blessed he whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose hope is in the LORD, his God.
    Who made heaven and earth,
    the sea and all that is in them.
    R. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.

    Alleluia See Acts 16:14b
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Open our heart, O Lord,
    to listen to the words of your Son.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 13:47-53
    Jesus said to the disciples:
    “The Kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea,
    which collects fish of every kind.
    When it is full they haul it ashore
    and sit down to put what is good into buckets.
    What is bad they throw away.
    Thus it will be at the end of the age.
    The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous
    and throw them into the fiery furnace,
    where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”

    “Do you understand all these things?”
    They answered, “Yes.”
    And he replied,
    “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the Kingdom of heaven
    is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom
    both the new and the old.”
    When Jesus finished these parables, he went away from there.

    Feast day of Saint Peter Chrysologus, Bishop, Doctor of the Church, died July 31, 450
    Peter was baptized, educated, and ordained a deacon by Cornelius, Bishop of Imola (North-central Italy). Peter merited being called "Chrysologus", translated to mean golden-worded from his exceptional oratorical eloquence. In 433, Pope Sixtus III consecrated him bishop of Ravenna. He practiced many corporal and spiritual works of mercy and shepherded the people with diligence and care. He cautioned the people against paganism and indecent dancing. He was made a Doctor of the Church in 1729 because of his simple, practical and clear Sermons from the Gospel.

    have mercy on us, O Lord!
    V. Thou hast redeemed us, O Lord, in Thy Blood.
    R. And made us, for our God, a Kingdom.
    Let us pray.
    Almighty and eternal God, Thou hast appointed Thine only-begotten Son the Redeemer of the world, and willed to be appeased by His Blood. Grant we beg of Thee, that we may worthily adore this price of our salvation, and through its power be safeguarded from the evils of the present life, so that we may rejoice in its fruits forever in Heaven. Through the same Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

    Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Priest
    Lectionary: 405

    Reading 1 Jer 26:1-9
    In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim,
    son of Josiah, king of Judah,
    this message came from the LORD:
    Thus says the LORD:
    Stand in the court of the house of the LORD
    and speak to the people of all the cities of Judah
    who come to worship in the house of the LORD;
    whatever I command you, tell them, and omit nothing.
    Perhaps they will listen and turn back,
    each from his evil way,
    so that I may repent of the evil I have planned to inflict upon them
    for their evil deeds.
    Say to them: Thus says the LORD:
    If you disobey me,
    not living according to the law I placed before you
    and not listening to the words of my servants the prophets,
    whom I send you constantly though you do not obey them,
    I will treat this house like Shiloh,
    and make this the city to which all the nations of the earth
    shall refer when cursing another.

    Now the priests, the prophets, and all the people
    heard Jeremiah speak these words in the house of the LORD.
    When Jeremiah finished speaking
    all that the LORD bade him speak to all the people,
    the priests and prophets laid hold of him, crying,
    “You must be put to death!
    Why do you prophesy in the name of the LORD:
    ‘This house shall be like Shiloh,’ and
    ‘This city shall be desolate and deserted’?”
    And all the people gathered about Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.

    Responsorial Psalm 69:5, 8-10, 14
    R. (14c) Lord, in your great love, answer me.
    Those outnumber the hairs of my head
    who hate me without cause.
    Too many for my strength
    are they who wrongfully are my enemies.
    Must I restore what I did not steal?
    R. Lord, in your great love, answer me.
    Since for your sake I bear insult,
    and shame covers my face.
    I have become an outcast to my brothers,
    a stranger to my mother’s sons,
    Because zeal for your house consumes me,
    and the insults of those who blaspheme you fall upon me.
    R. Lord, in your great love, answer me.
    But I pray to you, O LORD,
    for the time of your favor, O God!
    In your great kindness answer me
    with your constant help.
    R. Lord, in your great love, answer me.

    Alleluia 1 Pt 1:25
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    The word of the Lord remains forever;
    this is the word that has been proclaimed to you.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 13:54-58
    Jesus came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue.
    They were astonished and said,
    “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds?
    Is he not the carpenter’s son?
    Is not his mother named Mary
    and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?
    Are not his sisters all with us?
    Where did this man get all this?”
    And they took offense at him.
    But Jesus said to them,
    “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place
    and in his own house.”
    And he did not work many mighty deeds there
    because of their lack of faith.

    Feast day of Saint Ignatius of Loyola born October 23, 1491 died July 31, 1556
    Ignatius was a Spanish Basque Catholic priest and theologian, who co-founded the religious order called the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and became its first Superior General at Paris in 1541. The Jesuit order served the Pope as missionaries, and they were bound by a fourth vow of special obedience to the sovereign pontiff in regard to the missions. They therefore emerged as an important force during the time of the Counter-Reformation.

    Ignatius is remembered as a talented spiritual director. He recorded his method in a celebrated treatise called the Spiritual Exercises, a simple set of meditations, prayers, and other mental exercises, first published in 1548. The Spiritual Exercises came to be after Ignatius was recovering from a leg wound incurred during the Siege of Pamplona in 1521, Ignatius made a retreat with the Benedictine monks at their abbey high on Montserrat in Catalonia, northern Spain, where he hung up his sword before the statue of the Virgin of Montserrat. The monks introduced him to the spiritual exercises of Garcia de Cisneros, which were based in large part on the teachings of the Brothers of the Common Life, the promoters of the "devotio moderna". From Montserrat, he left for Barcelona but took a detour through the town of Manresa, where he eventually remained for several months, continuing his convalescence at a local hospital. During this time he discovered The Imitation of Christ of Thomas à Kempis, the crown jewel of the "devotio moderna", which, unlike the focus on labor in the Lord's vineyard which Ignatius will give to his Constitutions, gave little grounding for an apostolic spirituality. He also spent much of his time praying in a cave nearby, where he practiced rigorous asceticism. During this time Ignatius experienced a series of visions, and formulated the fundamentals of his Spiritual Exercises.
    The structure of the Spiritual Exercises is this: The original, complete form of the Exercises is a retreat of about 30 days in silence and solitude. The Exercises are divided into four "weeks" of varying length with four major themes: sin and God's mercy, episodes in the life of Jesus, the passion of Jesus, and the resurrection of Jesus together with a contemplation on God's love. This last is often seen as the goal of Ignatian spirituality, to find God in all things. The "weeks" represent stages in a process of wholehearted commitment to the service of God.

    Ignatius was beatified in 1609, and then canonized on March 12, 1622. His feast day is celebrated on July 31. He is the patron saint of the Basque provinces of Gipuzkoa and Biscay as well as the Society of Jesus, and was declared patron saint of all spiritual retreats by Pope Pius XI in 1922. Ignatius is also a patron saint of soldiers.

    You're welcome. I am praying the 54 day rosary novena for the warning to happen Aug. 2, but it seems that will come and go without the warning. Thanks be to God for extra time for myself and family to be better prepared, but waiting has always been and continues to be very difficult for me. I have a new daily prayer in mind for all the days of August......

    Memorial of Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
    Lectionary: 406

    Reading 1 Jer 26:11-16, 24
    The priests and prophets said to the princes and to all the people,
    “This man deserves death;
    he has prophesied against this city,
    as you have heard with your own ears.”
    Jeremiah gave this answer to the princes and all the people:
    “It was the LORD who sent me to prophesy against this house and city
    all that you have heard.
    Now, therefore, reform your ways and your deeds;
    listen to the voice of the LORD your God,
    so that the LORD will repent of the evil with which he threatens you.
    As for me, I am in your hands;
    do with me what you think good and right.
    But mark well: if you put me to death,
    it is innocent blood you bring on yourselves,
    on this city and its citizens.
    For in truth it was the LORD who sent me to you,
    to speak all these things for you to hear.”

    Thereupon the princes and all the people
    said to the priests and the prophets,
    “This man does not deserve death;
    it is in the name of the LORD, our God, that he speaks to us.”

    So Ahikam, son of Shaphan, protected Jeremiah,
    so that he was not handed over to the people to be put to death

    Responsorial Psalm 69:15-16, 30-31, 33-34
    R. (14c) Lord, in your great love, answer me.
    Rescue me out of the mire; may I not sink!
    may I be rescued from my foes,
    and from the watery depths.
    Let not the flood-waters overwhelm me,
    nor the abyss swallow me up,
    nor the pit close its mouth over me.
    R. Lord, in your great love, answer me.
    But I am afflicted and in pain;
    let your saving help, O God, protect me.
    I will praise the name of God in song,
    and I will glorify him with thanksgiving.
    R. Lord, in your great love, answer me.
    “See, you lowly ones, and be glad;
    you who seek God, may your hearts revive!
    For the LORD hears the poor,
    and his own who are in bonds he spurns not.”
    R. Lord, in your great love, answer me.

    Alleluia Mt 5:10
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness
    for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 14:1-12
    Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus
    and said to his servants, “This man is John the Baptist.
    He has been raised from the dead;
    that is why mighty powers are at work in him.”

    Now Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison
    on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,
    for John had said to him,
    “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
    Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people,
    for they regarded him as a prophet.
    But at a birthday celebration for Herod,
    the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests
    and delighted Herod so much
    that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.
    Prompted by her mother, she said,
    “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
    The king was distressed,
    but because of his oaths and the guests who were present,
    he ordered that it be given, and he had John beheaded in the prison.
    His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl,
    who took it to her mother.
    His disciples came and took away the corpse
    and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.

    Feast day of Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop, Doctor of the Church, and the founder of the Redemptorist Congregation, patron of theologians, died 1787
    from Catholic.org
    Alphonsus Marie Antony John Cosmos Damien Michael Gaspard de Liguori was born on September 27,1696, at Marianella, near Naples, Italy. Raised in a pious home, Alphonsus went on retreats with his father, Don Joseph, who was a naval officer and a captain of the Royal Galleys. Alphonsus was the oldest of seven children, raised by a devout mother of Spanish descent. Educated at the University of Naples, Alphonsus received his doctorate at the age of sixteen. By age nineteen he was practicing law, but he saw the transitory nature of the secular world, and after a brief time, retreated from the law courts and his fame. Visiting the local Hospital for Incurables on August 28, 1723, he had a vision and was told to consecrate his life solely to God. In response, Alphonsus dedicated himself to the religious life, even while suffering persecution from his family. He finally agreed to become a priest but to live at home as a member of a group of secular missionaries. He was ordained on December 21, 1726, and he spent six years giving missions throughout Naples. In April 1729, Alphonsus went to live at the "Chiflese College," founded in Naples by Father Matthew Ripa, the Apostle of China. There he met Bishop Thomas Falcoia, founder of the Congregation of Pious Workers. This lifelong friendship aided Alphonsus, as did his association with a mystic, Sister Mary Celeste. With their aid, Alphonsus founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer on November 9, 1732. The foundation faced immediate problems, and after just one year, Alphonsus found himself with only one lay brother, his other companions having left to form their own religious group. He started again, recruited new members, and in 1743 became the prior of two new congregations, one for men and one for women. Pope Benedict XIV gave his approval for the men's congregation in 1749 and for the women's in 1750. Alphonsus was preaching missions in the rural areas and writing. He refused to become the bishop of Palermo but in 1762 had to accept the papal command to accept the see of St. Agatha of the Goths near Naples. Here he discovered more than thirty thousand uninstructed men and women and four hundred indifferent priests. For thirteen years Alphonsus fed the poor, instructed families, reorganized the seminary and religious houses, taught theology, and wrote. His austerities were rigorous, and he suffered daily the pain from rheumatism that was beginning to deform his body. He spent several years having to drink from tubes because his head was so bent forward. An attack of rheumatic fever, from May 1768 to June 1769, left him paralyzed. He was not allowed to resign his see, however, until 1775. In 1780, Alphonsus was tricked into signing a submission for royal approval of his congregation. This submission altered the original rule, and as a result Alphonsus was denied any authority among the Redemptorists. Deposed and excluded from his own congregation, Alphonsus suffered great anguish. But he overcame his depression, and he experienced visions, performed miracles, and gave prophecies. He died peacefully on August 1,1787, at Nocera di Pagani, near Naples as the Angelus was ringing. He was beatified in 1816 and canonized in 1839. In 1871, Alphonsus was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX. His writings on moral, theological, and ascetic matters had great impact and have survived through the years, especially his Moral Theology and a classic book called the Glories of Mary.
    The Glories of Mary was written at a time when some were criticizing Marian devotions, and was written in part as a defense of Marian devotion. The book combines numerous citations in favor of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary from the Church Fathers and the Doctors of the Church with Saint Alphonsus' own personal views on Marian veneration and includes a number of Marian prayers and practices.

    The first part of the book focuses on the Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen) prayer and explains how God gave Mary to mankind as the "Gate of Heaven". On this topic, St. Alphonsus quoted Saint Bonaventure, "No one can enter Heaven unless by Mary, as though through a door."

    The second part of the book deals with the key Marian feasts such as the Immaculate Conception, Nativity, Purification, Annunciation, Assumption, etc. The third part focuses on the Seven Sorrows of Mary, explaining how her "prolonged martyrdom" was greater than that of all other martyrs. The fourth part discusses ten different virtues of the Blessed Virgin, while the fifth part provides a collection of Marian prayers, meditations and devotions. An appendix is devoted to defending the role of Mary as mediatrix of all graces.
    Bishop Alphonsus was buried at the monastery of the Pagani near Naples. He is the patron of confessors, moral theologians, and the lay apostolate. In liturgical art he is depicted as bent over with rheumatism or as a young priest.

    optional prayer of Te Deum for the month of August
    O, God, we praise You and acknowledge You
    to be the supreme Lord.
    Everlasting Father, all the earth worships You.
    All the angels, the heavens and all angelic powers,
    All the cherubim and seraphim, continually cry to you:
    Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts!
    Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of Your glory.
    The glorious choir of the apostles,
    The wonderful company of prophets,
    The white-robed army of martyrs, praise You.
    Holy Church throughout the world acknowledges You:
    The Father of infinite majesty;
    Your adorable, true and only Son;
    Also the Holy Spirit, the Comforter.
    O Christ, You are the King of glory!
    You are the everlasting Son of the Father.
    When You took it upon Yourself to deliver man,
    You did not disdain the Virgin's womb.
    Having overcome the sting of death,
    You opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
    You sit at the right hand of God in the glory of the Father
    We believe that You will come to be our Judge.
    We, therefore, beg You to help Your servants
    whom You have redeemed with Your Precious Blood.
    Let them be numbered with Your saints in everlasting glory.
    Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance!
    Govern them, and raise them up forever.
    Every day we thank You.
    And we praise Your name forever; yes, forever and ever.
    O Lord, deign to keep us from sin this day.
    Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.
    Let your mercy, O Lord be upon us, for we have hoped in You.
    O Lord, in you I have put my trust; never let me be put to shame.

    Eighteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 112

    Reading 1 Is 55:1-3
    Thus says the LORD:
    All you who are thirsty,
    come to the water!
    You who have no money,
    come, receive grain and eat;
    Come, without paying and without cost,
    drink wine and milk!
    Why spend your money for what is not bread;
    your wages for what fails to satisfy?
    Heed me, and you shall eat well,
    you shall delight in rich fare.
    Come to me heedfully,
    listen, that you may have life.
    I will renew with you the everlasting covenant,
    the benefits assured to David.

    Responsorial Psalm Ps 145:8-9, 15-16, 17-18
    R. (cf. 16) The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.
    The LORD is gracious and merciful,
    slow to anger and of great kindness.
    The LORD is good to all
    and compassionate toward all his works.
    R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.
    The eyes of all look hopefully to you,
    and you give them their food in due season;
    you open your hand
    and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
    R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.
    The LORD is just in all his ways
    and holy in all his works.
    The LORD is near to all who call upon him,
    to all who call upon him in truth.
    R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.

    Reading 2 Rom 8:35, 37-39
    Brothers and sisters:
    What will separate us from the love of Christ?
    Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine,
    or nakedness, or peril, or the sword?
    No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly
    through him who loved us.
    For I am convinced that neither death, nor life,
    nor angels, nor principalities,
    nor present things, nor future things,
    nor powers, nor height, nor depth,
    nor any other creature will be able to separate us
    from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    Alleluia Mt 4:4b
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    One does not live on bread alone,
    but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 14:13-21
    When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist,
    he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself.
    The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns.
    When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd,
    his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.
    When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said,
    “This is a deserted place and it is already late;
    dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages
    and buy food for themselves.”
    Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away;
    give them some food yourselves.”
    But they said to him,
    “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.”
    Then he said, “Bring them here to me, ”
    and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass.
    Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven,
    he said the blessing, broke the loaves,
    and gave them to the disciples,
    who in turn gave them to the crowds.
    They all ate and were satisfied,
    and they picked up the fragments left over—
    twelve wicker baskets full.
    Those who ate were about five thousand men,

    Monday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 407/408

    Reading 1 from Jeremiah

    In the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah,
    in the fifth month of the fourth year,
    the prophet Hananiah, son of Azzur, from Gibeon,
    said to me in the house of the LORD
    in the presence of the priests and all the people:
    “Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:
    ‘I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.
    Within two years I will restore to this place
    all the vessels of the temple of the LORD which Nebuchadnezzar,
    king of Babylon, took away from this place to Babylon.
    And I will bring back to this place Jeconiah,
    son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah,
    and all the exiles of Judah who went to Babylon,’ says the LORD,
    ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”

    The prophet Jeremiah answered the prophet Hananiah
    in the presence of the priests and all the people assembled
    in the house of the LORD, and said:
    Amen! thus may the LORD do!
    May he fulfill the things you have prophesied
    by bringing the vessels of the house of the LORD
    and all the exiles back from Babylon to this place!
    But now, listen to what I am about to state in your hearing
    and the hearing of all the people.
    From of old, the prophets who were before you and me prophesied
    war, woe, and pestilence against many lands and mighty kingdoms.
    But the prophet who prophesies peace
    is recognized as truly sent by the LORD
    only when his prophetic prediction is fulfilled.

    Thereupon the prophet Hananiah took the yoke
    from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it,
    and said in the presence of all the people:
    “Thus says the LORD: ‘Even so, within two years
    I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon,
    from off the neck of all the nations.’” At that, the prophet Jeremiah went away.

    Some time after the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke
    from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah,
    The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:
    Go tell Hananiah this:
    Thus says the LORD:
    By breaking a wooden yoke, you forge an iron yoke!
    For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:
    A yoke of iron I will place on the necks
    of all these nations serving Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon,
    and they shall serve him; even the beasts of the field I give him.

    To the prophet Hananiah the prophet Jeremiah said:
    Hear this, Hananiah!
    The LORD has not sent you,
    and you have raised false confidence in this people.
    For this, says the LORD, I will dispatch you from the face of the earth;
    this very year you shall die,
    because you have preached rebellion against the LORD.
    That same year, in the seventh month, Hananiah the prophet died.

    Responsorial Psalm

    R. (68b) Lord, teach me your statutes.
    Remove from me the way of falsehood,
    and favor me with your law.
    R. Lord, teach me your statutes.
    Take not the word of truth from my mouth,
    for in your ordinances is my hope.
    R. Lord, teach me your statutes.
    Let those turn to me who fear you
    and acknowledge your decrees.
    R. Lord, teach me your statutes.
    Let my heart be perfect in your statutes,
    that I be not put to shame.
    R. Lord, teach me your statutes.
    Sinners wait to destroy me,
    but I pay heed to your decrees.
    R. Lord, teach me your statutes.
    From your ordinances I turn not away,
    for you have instructed me.
    R. Lord, teach me your statutes.
    Alleluia

    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Rabbi, you are the Son of God;
    you are the King of Israel.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Gospel Matthew 14, 22-36

    Jesus made the disciples get into a boat
    and precede him to the other side of the sea,
    while he dismissed the crowds.
    After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.
    When it was evening he was there alone.
    Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore,
    was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.
    During the fourth watch of the night,
    he came toward them, walking on the sea.
    When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified.
    “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.
    At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
    Peter said to him in reply,
    “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
    He said, “Come.”
    Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.
    But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened;
    and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
    Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him,
    and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
    After they got into the boat, the wind died down.
    Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying,
    “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

    After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
    When the men of that place recognized him,
    they sent word to all the surrounding country.
    People brought to him all those who were sick
    and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak,
    and as many as touched it were healed.

    Feast day of Saint Lydia, contemporary of Saint Paul, the first documented convert to Christianity in Europe.

    A certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, one who worshiped God, heard us; whose heart the Lord opened to listen to the things which were spoken by Paul. When she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and stay." So she persuaded us.

    Memorial of Saint John Vianney, Priest
    First reading
    Jeremiah 30:1-2, 12-15, 18-22
    The following message came to Jeremiah from the Lord: For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Write all the words I have spoken to you in a book.

    For thus says the Lord:
    Incurable is your wound,
    grievous your bruise;
    There is none to plead your cause,
    no remedy for your running sore,
    no healing for you.
    All your lovers have forgotten you,
    they do not seek you.
    I struck you as an enemy would strike,
    punished you cruelly;
    Why cry out over your wound?
    your pain is without relief.
    Because of your great guilt,
    your numerous sins,
    I have done this to you.

    Thus says the Lord:
    See! I will restore the tents of Jacob,
    his dwellings I will pity;
    City shall be rebuilt upon hill,
    and palace restored as it was.
    From them will resound songs of praise,
    the laughter of happy men.
    I will make them not few, but many;
    they will not be tiny, for I will glorify them.
    His sons shall be as of old,
    his assembly before me shall stand firm;
    I will punish all his oppressors.
    His leader shall be one of his own,
    and his rulers shall come from his kin.
    When I summon him, he shall approach me;
    how else should one take the deadly risk
    of approaching me? says the Lord.
    You shall be my people,
    and I will be your God.
    Psalm 102
    R. The Lord will build up Zion again, and appear in all his glory.
    The nations shall revere your name, O Lord,
    and all the kings of the earth your glory,
    When the Lord has rebuilt Zion
    and appeared in his glory;
    When he has regarded the prayer of the destitute,
    and not despised their prayer. R.
    The Lord will build up Zion again, and appear in all his glory.

    Let this be written for the generation to come,
    and let his future creatures praise the Lord:
    “The Lord looked down from his holy height,
    from heaven he beheld the earth,
    To hear the groaning of the prisoners,
    to release those doomed to die.” R.
    The Lord will build up Zion again, and appear in all his glory.

    The children of your servants shall abide,
    and their posterity shall continue in your presence,
    That the name of the Lord may be declared on Zion;
    and his praise, in Jerusalem,
    When the peoples gather together
    and the kingdoms, to serve the Lord. R.
    The Lord will build up Zion again, and appear in all his glory.

    Feast day of Saint John Vianney, also known as the Cure de Ars, patron of parish priests died in 1859
    John had wanted to become a priest, but his studies were interrupted in 1809 when he was drafted into Napoleon's armies. He would have been exempt, as an ecclesiastical student, but Napoleon had withdrawn the exemption in certain dioceses because of his need for soldiers. Two days after he had to report at Lyons, he became ill and was hospitalized, during which time his draft left without him. Once released from the hospital, he was sent for another draft. He went into a church to pray, and fell behind the group. He met a young man who volunteered to guide him back to his group, but instead led him deep into the mountains where deserters were staying. Vianney lived there for fourteen months, hidden in the byre attached to a farmhouse, and under the care of Claudine Fayot, a widow with four children. He assumed the name Jerome Vincent, and under that name, he opened a school for village children. Since the harsh weather isolated the town during the winter, the deserters were safe from gendarmes. However, after the snow melted, gendarmes came to the town constantly, searching for deserters. During these searches, Vianney hid inside stacks of fermenting hay in Fayot's barn. An imperial proclamation in March 1810 granted amnesty to all deserters. John continued his studies and was ordained a priest.
    Three years after Fr. John was made parish priest of Ars, a remote French village. Upon his arrival, Father Vianney noticed the toll the French Revolution and subsequent years of Napoleon's rule had upon the Faith of the people. At the time, Sundays in rural areas were spent working in the fields, or dancing and drinking in taverns. Vianney spent time in the confessional and gave homilies against blasphemy. If his parishioners did not give up lewd dancing, he refused them absolution. His reputation as confessor and spiritual director made him known throughout Europe. His life was one of extreme mortification. He was accustomed to the most severe austerities, flooded with lines of people waiting to confess, and harassed by the devil. By 1855, the number of pilgrims had reached 20,000 a year. During the last ten years of his life, he spent 16 to 18 hours a day in the confessional. Even the bishop forbade him to attend the annual retreats of the diocesan clergy because of the souls awaiting him. He spent at least 11 or 12 hours a day in the confessional during winter, and up to 16 in the summer. Father Vianney had a devotion to Saint Philomena and credited her intercession for restoring him to health after a severe illness.
    Father Vianney died at the age of 73 on August 4, 1859. The bishop presided over his funeral with 300 priests and more than 6,000 people in attendance.

    Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major

    First reading
    Jeremiah 31:1-7
    At that time, says the Lord,
    I will be the God of all the tribes of Israel,
    and they shall be my people.
    Thus says the Lord:
    The people that escaped the sword
    have found favor in the desert.
    As Israel comes forward to be given his rest,
    the Lord appears to him from afar:
    With age-old love I have loved you;
    so I have kept my mercy toward you.
    Again I will restore you, and you shall be rebuilt,
    O virgin Israel;
    Carrying your festive tambourines,
    you shall go forth dancing with the merrymakers.
    Again you shall plant vineyards
    on the mountains of Samaria;
    those who plant them shall enjoy the fruits.
    Yes, a day will come when the watchmen
    will call out on Mount Ephraim:
    “Rise up, let us go to Zion,
    to the Lord, our God.”

    For thus says the Lord:
    Shout with joy for Jacob,
    exult at the head of the nations;
    proclaim your praise and say:
    The Lord has delivered his people,
    the remnant of Israel.

    Jeremiah 31:10, 11-12ab, 13
    R. The Lord will guard us as a shepherd guards his flock.
    Hear the word of the Lord, O nations,
    proclaim it on distant isles, and say:
    He who scattered Israel, now gathers them together,
    he guards them as a shepherd his flock. R.
    The Lord shall ransom Jacob,
    he shall redeem him from the hand of his conqueror.
    Shouting, they shall mount the heights of Zion,
    they shall come streaming to the Lord’s blessings. R.
    Then the virgins shall make merry and dance,
    and young men and old as well.
    I will turn their mourning into joy,
    I will console and gladden them after their sorrows. R.

    Gospel Acclamation
    Alleluia, alleluia.
    A great prophet has arisen in our midst
    and God has visited his people. Lk 7:16
    Alleluia, alleluia.

    Matthew 15:21-28
    At that time Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But he did not say a word in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did him homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.

    Feast day of Our Lady of Snows (also known as the origin of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major)/ The Virgin of Medjugorje indicated in 1984 that August 5 is her true birthday and that August 5, 1984 was her 2000th birthday....so happy 2036th birthday, Blessed Mother!
    The story of Our Lady of Snows
    During the papacy of Liberius (352 to 366 A.D.) a childless Roman couple wondered what to do with their wealth after they died. In separate dreams to Pope Liberius and either the husband or wife of the couple, the Virgin Mary appealed to ask that a Church be built in her honor at a place that would be indicated the next day. During a hot August night, an improbable snowfall occurred on one of the seven hills surrounding Rome, the Esquiline hill. Marveling at the occurrence, Pope Liberius traced out the perimeter for a proposed Church according to the length and breadth of the fallen snow. A foundation was then laid in about the year 360 and later the Liberian Basilica was completed. In time the original structure fell to ruin.
    The Basilica was reconstructed and enlarged during the pontificate of Sixtus III (papacy from 432 to 440). The church became known as The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary Major) which stresses the great importance and the size of the Church (Major), the largest dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Rome. It is the home to a precious icon of the Virgin Mary that Pope St. Gregory the Great processed through the streets of Rome in 594 to pray for an end to an epidemic. Those prayers were instrumental in putting an abrupt end to the pestilence.
    Since Mary asked for the Church to be built with the associated snowy miracle, her title is known as Our Lady of the Snows. It was snow that marked the miracle of how the Church came to be, but these days white rose petals and jasmine are used to simulate the snow that fell during that hot summer night of August 4th to 5th in the fourth century. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore celebrates the miraculous snowfall every year on August 5th by shaking white rose petals and jasmine from the dome of the Basilica to celebrate the anniversary of its miraculous origin.

    The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord
    Entrance Antiphon

    In a resplendent cloud the Holy Spirit appeared.
    The Father’s voice was heard: This is my beloved Son,
    with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him. Cf. Mt 17:5

    Collect
    O God, who in the glorious Transfiguration
    of your Only Begotten Son
    confirmed the mysteries of faith by the witness of the Fathers
    and wonderfully prefigured our full adoption to sonship,
    grant, we pray, to your servants,
    that, listening to the voice of your beloved Son,
    we may merit to become co-heirs with him.
    Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
    one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    First Reading
    Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14
    As I watched:

    Thrones were set up
    and the Ancient One took his throne.
    His clothing was bright as snow,
    and the hair on his head as white as wool;
    his throne was flames of fire,
    with wheels of burning fire.
    A surging stream of fire
    flowed out from where he sat;
    Thousands upon thousands were ministering to him,
    and myriads upon myriads attended him.
    The court was convened and the books were opened.

    As the visions during the night continued, I saw:

    One like a Son of man coming,
    on the clouds of heaven;
    When he reached the Ancient One
    and was presented before him,
    The one like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship;
    all peoples, nations, and languages serve him.
    His dominion is an everlasting dominion
    that shall not be taken away,
    his kingship shall not be destroyed.

    Responsorial Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, 9
    R. The Lord is King, the Most High over all the earth.
    The Lord is King; let the earth rejoice;
    let the many islands be glad.
    Clouds and darkness are round about him,
    justice and judgment are the foundation of his throne. R.
    The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
    before the Lord of all the earth.
    The heavens proclaim his justice,
    and all peoples see his glory. R.
    Because you, O Lord, are the Most High over all the earth,
    exalted far above all gods. R.

    2 Peter 1:16-19
    Beloved: We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain. Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

    Gospel Acclamation
    Alleluia, alleluia.
    This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;
    listen to him. Mt 17:5c
    Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel of Saint Matthew 17:1-9
    Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother, John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone.

    As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

    Te Deum prayer for the month of August
    O, God, we praise You and acknowledge You
    to be the supreme Lord.
    Everlasting Father, all the earth worships You.
    All the angels, the heavens and all angelic powers,
    All the cherubim and seraphim, continually cry to you:
    Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts!
    Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of Your glory.
    The glorious choir of the apostles,
    The wonderful company of prophets,
    The white-robed army of martyrs, praise You.
    Holy Church throughout the world acknowledges You:
    The Father of infinite majesty;
    Your adorable, true and only Son;

    Thursday of the eighteenth week in ordinary time
    The First Reading Nahum 2:1, 3; 3:1-3, 6-7

    See, upon the mountains there advances
    the bearer of good news,
    announcing peace!
    Celebrate your feasts, O Judah,
    fulfill your vows!
    For nevermore shall you be invaded
    by the scoundrel; he is completely destroyed.
    The Lord will restore the vine of Jacob,
    the pride of Israel,
    Though ravagers have ravaged them
    and ruined the tendrils.

    Woe to the bloody city, all lies,
    full of plunder, whose looting never stops!
    The crack of the whip, the rumbling sounds of wheels;
    horses a-gallop, chariots bounding,
    Cavalry charging, the flame of the sword, the flash of the spear,
    the many slain, the heaping corpses,
    the endless bodies to stumble upon!
    I will cast filth upon you,
    disgrace you and put you to shame;
    Till everyone who sees you runs from you, saying,
    “Nineveh is destroyed; who can pity her?
    Where can one find any to console her?”
    Deuteronomy 32:35cd-36ab, 39abcd, 41

    R. It is I who deal death and give life.
    Close at hand is the day of their disaster,
    and their doom is rushing upon them!
    Surely, the Lord shall do justice for his people;
    on his servants he shall have pity. R.
    “Learn then that I, I alone, am God,
    and there is no god besides me.
    It is I who bring both death and life,
    I who inflict wounds and heal them.” R.
    I will sharpen my flashing sword,
    and my hand shall lay hold of my quiver,
    “With vengeance I will repay my foes
    and requite those who hate me.” R.
    Gospel Acclamation

    Alleluia, alleluia.
    Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness;
    for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Mt 5:10
    Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel of Saint Matthew 16:24-28

    Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay each according to his conduct. Amen, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.”

    The feast day of Saint Pope Sixtus II, Martyr and companions, died August 6, 258
    As Pope, Sixtus II restored the relations with the African and Eastern churches which had been broken off by his predecessor on the question of heretical baptism raised by the heresy Novatianism.

    In the persecutions under Emperor Valerian in 258, numerous bishops, priests, and deacons were put to death. Pope Sixtus II was one of the first victims of this persecution, being beheaded on 6 August. He was martyred along with six deacons— Januarius, Vincentius, Magnus, Stephanus, Felicissimus and Agapitus.

    First reading (I have always liked this passage where the LORD answers Habakkuk question/complaint)
    Habakkuk 1:12–2:4

    Are you not from eternity, O Lord,
    my holy God, immortal?
    O Lord, you have marked him for judgment,
    O Rock, you have readied him punishment!
    Too pure are your eyes to look upon evil,
    and the sight of misery you cannot endure.
    Why, then, do you gaze on the faithless in silence
    while the wicked man devours
    one more just than himself?
    You have made man like the fish of the sea,
    like creeping things without a ruler.
    He brings them all up with his hook,
    he hauls them away with his net,
    He gathers them in his seine;
    and so he rejoices and exults.
    Therefore he sacrifices to his net,
    and burns incense to his seine;
    for thanks to them his portion is generous,
    and his repast sumptuous.
    Shall he, then, keep on brandishing his sword
    to slay peoples without mercy?
    I will stand at my guard post,
    and station myself upon the rampart,
    And keep watch to see what he will say to me,
    and what answer he will give to my complaint.

    Then the Lord answered me and said:
    Write down the vision
    Clearly upon the tablets,
    so that one can read it readily.
    For the vision still has its time,
    presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint;
    If it delays, wait for it,
    it will surely come, it will not be late.
    The rash man has no integrity;
    but the just man, because of his faith, shall live.

    Responsorial Psalm 9

    R. You forsake not those who seek you, O Lord.
    The Lord sits enthroned forever;
    he has set up his throne for judgment.
    He judges the world with justice;
    he governs the peoples with equity. R.
    The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
    a stronghold in times of distress.
    They trust in you who cherish your name,
    for you forsake not those who seek you, O Lord. R.
    Sing praise to the Lord enthroned in Zion;
    proclaim among the nations his deeds;
    For the avenger of blood has remembered;
    he has not forgotten the cry of the poor. R.
    Gospel Acclamation

    Alleluia, alleluia.
    Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death
    and brought life to light through the Gospel. Cf. 2 Tm 1:10
    Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel of Saint Matthew 17:14-20

    A man came up to Jesus, knelt down before him, and said, “Lord, have pity on my son, who is a lunatic and suffers severely; often he falls into fire, and often into water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him.” Jesus said in reply, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you? Bring the boy here to me.” Jesus rebuked him and the demon came out of him, and from that hour the boy was cured. Then the disciples approached Jesus in private and said, “Why could we not drive it out?” He said to them, “Because of your little faith. Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

    Feast day of Saint Dominic, Priest, Founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), original promoter of the Rosary, died August 6, 1221

    Dominic Guzman was born in Spain in 1171. After his primary education, Dominic studied to become a priest. He had compassion for the poor and enslaved and had a holy zeal to do what he could to help bring Christ to people. After Dominic was ordained a priest, the bishop in Spain sent Dominic on a mission to northern Europe. On the way, Father Dominic encountered Albigesians in southern France. Albigensianism was a heresy where people believed that the body and the earth was evil. Its adherents practiced asceticism like fasting, they abstained from meat, traveled on foot and were not materialistic and favored suicide.
    Pope Innocent III summoned Dominic and other missionaries to southern France to defend and preserve the Catholic faith against the errors of Albigensianism. First the missionaries had to reform their own worldly ways to start to gain the consideration of the Albigensians. They started by shedding all their unnecessary possessions and they began to walk instead of ride. Dominic was threatened with assassination and typically at his sermons, he was mocked. The priests would go to a village for debating events and converse with the locals for days, a week or a month at a time. At the conclusion of one debate it was decided that Dominic’s papers and the heretic’s papers would both be thrown into the fire to determine who was speaking the truth in the eyes of God. Fire consumed the Albigensianist’s papers while Dominic’s volume was supernaturally thrust out of the fire. Not content with that conclusion, the mob threw Dominic’s papers a second and even a third time into the flames, but his material was not damaged. This miracle strengthened Dominic’s resolve but did little to dismantle the opinions of the heretics.
    Then there was a breakthrough. At the conclusion of one open-air sermon, several Albigensian women approached Dominic and asked to be converted into “the faith in which we may live, may die, and may be saved.” Dominic was overjoyed. He knew the women would have to separate themselves from their Albigensian families to nurture their fledgling Catholic faith. That was on his mind on the evening of July 22, 1206, the Feast of Mary Magdalene, when resting on a high plain he implored the intercession of the Virgin Mary for help in finding a dwelling for the new converts. Suddenly a meteor shot through the sky and completed its trajectory over the forsaken church of Our Lady of Prouille. Dominic took that as a sign and petitioned the Bishop of Toulouse for the property. Within months, a deed was presented to “Dominic of Osma the church of Saint Mary of Prouille and the adjacent land, to the extent of thirty feet.” A convent was built for nine women where they worked, prayed, and contemplated religious matters according to the rule of Saint Augustine. Despite that small conversion victory, Dominic had to wait several more fruitless years with little progress in making more converts. Tradition tells us that at one point Dominic cried out in discouragement at the progress of his mission. He then received a vision of Our Blessed Mother handing him a rosary garland. Our Lady said, “Dominic, wonder not that until now you have obtained so little fruit by your labors; you have spent them on barren soil, not yet watered with the dew of Divine grace. When God willed to renew the face of the earth, He began by sending down on it the fertilizing rain of the Angelic Salutation (Hail Mary, full of grace the LORD is with thee..... Therefore preach my Psalter (rosary), and you will obtain an abundant harvest.”
    By 1214, a few men wanted to join Dominic in preaching against heresy. In July 1215, the Bishop of Toulouse granted permission for Dominic to form an “Order of Preachers” which sought to unite poverty with the office of preaching the Gospel. More men started to show interest in joining the friars. As a religious community leader, Dominic traveled to Rome in November 1215 for the fourth Lateran Council. All the bishops and abbots of the church as well as priors and heads of religious orders were convened. Pope Innocent III called the meeting in an effort to reform the Universal Church, improve morals, make heresy extinct and strengthen faith. Interestingly, it was at this meeting that Dominic met Francis of Assisi and struck up a friendship. The link between the founders of these two Catholic orders powerhouses has been described, “Friendship still unites the Dominicans to the Franciscans…they have gone to God by the same paths, as two precious perfumes gently reaching the same spot in the heavens.”
    In a span of four years, the preachers founded more than 60 convents to include 500 men religious and 100 nuns. Father Dominic spent the last few years of his life revisiting newly established Dominican convents and monasteries to settle anxieties, organize duties, and make sure the rule was carefully followed. It is said that when he traveled, he sang hymns like Ave Maris Stella to Our Lady and Veni Creator to the Holy Spirit.
    Dominic started to experience fatigue and fevers in mid-July 1221 that led to his death on August 6, 1221 in Italy. Almost two years after his death, some Friars decided to transfer Dominic’s remains to a more distinguished tomb. Many friars traveled long distances for the transferal ceremony. Jordon of Saxony described the event: “Now so long exposed to the rain and heat in wretched grave, would not the body of Dominic emerge worm-eaten and exhaling an atmosphere of decay? When the stone laid over the tomb was raised, a sweet and delectable fragrance spread from it, a fragrance that might have proceeded from a perfume box rather than a sepulcher. The archbishop, the bishops, and all those present, filled with joy and wonder, fell on their knees weeping and praising God who had glorified His elect in so striking a manner.” Upon hearing the reports, Pope Gregory IX decided to begin the process of canonization and declared Dominic a saint on July 13, 1234.
