Additional Pope Paul VI story :
When Pope Paul VI learned that Fr. Luis Andreu's Mother was to take her permanent vows as a Visitandine Nun, he contacted the superiors of the surviving three priest brothers of Fr. Luis Andreu , to get their permission to let the brothers attend the ceremony of their mother's vows. The Pope personally paid for one of the brother's round trip air fare from Taiwan.

SAINT JOSE MARIE ESCRIVA AND GARABANDAL

On October 6, 2002, Pope John Paul II canonized the founder of Opus Dei in St Peter’s Square, Rome, in the presence of more than 300,000 people from all round the world.

The link between St Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer with the Garabandal apparitions is not well known. In the summer of 1962 he spent a few days of holiday in Suances, Cantabria, during which he visited Garabandal, accompanied by several young men in ties, probably members of Opus Dei. He spoke cheerfully and profoundly to the girls, an experience they still recall fondly after all these years. The visit was not unusual since at that time, and up until the Official Note of the Bishop of Santander of 7 October 1962, many priests visited Garabandal.
As it happens, news of this visit came out by chance years later when somebody showed the girls a prayer picture for God’s favour through his intercession, printed during his canonisation. It was then that the girls joyfully recounted the meeting, about which we still don’t know much more today.

Blessed Maria Rafols & Mother Maria Naya, believers in Garabandal.

Blessed Maria Rafols had visions of the Sacred Heart.

Maria Naya is the famous "daughter" of Blessed Maria Rafols (1781-1853), who founded the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Ann at Zaragoza in the mid-nineteenth century.

Among other religious functions, Madre Naya held the so-called delicate one of Mistress of novices. She became famous in Spain for having discovered the writings of the Blessed Foundress, but still more for having been the religious about whom the latter had prophesied who she was and when she would discover her own "Escritos" ("Writings")!

Gifted as well with a charism of prophecy that she exercised with regard to certain Church events, Sister Maria Naya also "used" her gift within the framework of the "events" then occurring at Garabandal.

Thus, for example, and without having been previously informed, she announced the "Milagrucu" to the religious sisters of her Congregation in Madrid, and she did so on the following morning without having received any information whatsoever about it!

Similarly, she made an astonishing prophecy about Fr. Luis Maria Andreu (see July 18, 1964), as well as about the last locution to Mari- Loli (see October 24, 1965).

Madre Maria Naya's keen interest in Garabandal is duly attested to by many other original documents in our possession.

I'd say that that is pretty good company.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I remember reading somewhere once that noted French historian, Joachim Bouflet, personally corroborated St. Padre Pio's belief in Garabandal.

I also have a question for you Glenn: do you think the Holy Spirit will allow the Holy Father to have some insight into the imminent arrival of the Warning?

Permission from the ArchBishop for priests to go to Garabandal

    -In April 2007, Conchita sent Joey Lomangino a copy of a letter dated February 12, 2007 from Archbishop Carlos Sierra of Oviedo, the acting Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese of Santander in Spain to a prominent Garabandal supporter in that country. We are encouraged by the tone of the Archbishop’s letter which seems to indicate a warm familiarity with the apparitions and points to a new openness of the Hierarchy of the Church to the events at Garabandal. He also reasserts authorization for priests to go to Garabandal on pilgrimage and say Mass and hear confessions. With Conchita’s permission we reprint an excerpt;
“I want you to know that I am open to receiving and considering all information about Garabandal , and would like to continue-as long as our Holy Father wishes me to serve as Apostolic Administrator-the work that my brothers at the Bishopric have already done in reference to this subject. What I have just done is authorize the priests to go to Garabandal and hold Holy Mass at the Parish, at any desired time, and to administer the Sacrament of Reconciliation to anyone that wishes to receive it.
I am sure the next Bishop will promote further studies to examine in depth the Garabandal events and will send the findings to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome.
I respect apparitions and have known of authentic conversions. How can we not always feel the need to open our heart to our Mother Mary to tell her that we need her protection, her help, her courage, her hope, her faith and her love when faced with these events! I encourage you to keep maintaining such devotion toward our Mother.”
    -Carlos, Archbishop of Oviedo

    TRANSLATION OF ABOVE LETTER :

    Dear Father:
Keeping in mind the indications of the Holy See and of His Excellency the Bishop of Santander, as required by Canon Law, we give our approval and blessing to the publication in our Archdiocese of the Message of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary at San Sebastian de Garabandal, knowing as we do, in the light of Divine Revelation, that we are urgently required to practice prayer, sacrifice and devotion to the Holy Eucharist and the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, and to display filial obedience, love and faithfulness towards the Vicar of Christ and the Holy Church.
We consequently find nothing in this Message, attributed to the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, that is contrary to the Faith or morals; rather do we note its opportune, useful and beneficial admonitions for the attainment of eternal salvation.
Prompt and filial obedience to the provisions of the Church has been the characteristic of the privileged persons in these apparitions, and this is a sure mark of God's presence for everyone to see.
The Holy Church showed its wisdom in relation to these important events by giving them careful study and by exercising pastoral vigilance; it did not issue any kind of prohibition or rejection.
One of the Officials of the Sacred Congregation for the Defense of the Faith, Msgr. Philippi, who was consulted in Rome by the Very Rev. P. Elias, Superior of the Carmel of the City of Puebla, on the subject of the apparitions of the Most Blessed Virgin at Garabandal, stated that the fact that Padre Pio -- well known for his virtue, his knowledge and his faithfulness to the Holy See -- acknowledged these apparitions, and encouraged the 4 Visionaries to spread the Message of the Most Blessed Virgin, was great proof of the authenticity of these apparitions.

Given at Jalapa de la Inmaculada on the 8th of July 1966

In Spanish. This video is Don Juan Antonio del Val Gallo, Bishop of Santander (1971-1991): "Some six years before I retired (1991), in 1985 and publicly in 1988, gave permission for priests to say Mass in the Church of Garabandal. I removed the bans and made a second inquiry I sent to Cardinal Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI."

In 1982, Bishop del Val was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent an operation in Santander performed by Dr. Andres Garcia de Tunon, a believer in Garabandal (it seems the Bishop could never get away from Garabandalistas). While he was recuperating in the hospital, he received a visit from Mari Loli, one of the visionaries of Garabandal, who had been driven there in the car of a French priest, Father de Baillencourt and his secretary, Christina Bocabeille.

Loli was alone when she entered the Bishop’s room and during her visit she asked him if he had anything kissed by the Blessed Virgin at Garabandal. When he said no, Loli gave him her last crucifix. The ever cautious Bishop responded: “I’ll take it because it comes from you.” (Loli was on cordial terms with the Bishop.)

After having completed the operation on the Bishop in 1982, Dr. Tunon went to see him in his hospital room during the recovery period. "I was sitting on the edge of the bed when he said to me, 'I, Juan Antonio del Val Gallo, believe in Garabandal. But as bishop I can't say that.'"

Conchita Letter to Father Rolando, the priest of Garabandal on the 50th Anniversary of apparitions.

    May 17, 2011

    Dear Father Rolando

I join with all of you in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the events of Garabandal. They're for me 50 years of contemplation of what for me was the most beautiful experience of the world. I thank God for having been part of this experience, it is impossible to adequately describe all that occurred. However I can say that all these events have given to my soul, the surest guarantee of faithand hope. Thank you, Father Roland, for giving me the opportunity to reread canonce again to the village of Garabandal, Our Lady's message:

"We have to make many sacrifices, much penance, visiting the Blessed Sacrament frequently, but we must be very good and if we do not, we come upona punishment. The cup is filling up and we do not change if we come upon a very great punishment. "

"Because of my message of October 18 has not been fulfilled or given to the world, I warn you, therefore, that this is the last. At first, the cup was filling, is nowoverflowing. Many cardinals, bishops and priests are on the road to perdition andmany souls go with them. It is becoming less important to the Eucharist. You should turn the wrath of God upon you in your efforts. If you ask Him for forgiveness with sincerity of your soul, He will forgive you. I, your Mother, through the intercession of the angel S. Michael, I want you to tell you that I said. Now you are the last warnings. I love you very much and do not want your condemnation.Ask us and we sincerely give you. You must sacrifice yourselves more. Think of the Passion of Jesus. "

Father Rolando, there is nothing of greater importance than I can say, apart from the specific message of Our Lady.

    In Union of Prayer,
    Conchita

    Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani

Jacinta herself was to be introduced to Cardinal Ottaviani, in 1975, for we know the astonishing exhortation he then addressed to her: "We must pray a great deal, Jacinta, so that the Church may acknowledge Garabandal," after . . . having told her that 'he believed in the supernatural character of Garabandal'!
    [From 'Garabandal' Book, page 234]
So, there you have one of the most highest officials, next to the Pope himself, believing in the events of Garabandal!

Vatican knows the date of the Miracle
The date of the warning is unknown, but Conchita, the Bishop, and the Pope know the date of the Miracle, as does the congregation of the Holy Office. Conchita declared it in Rome before this Vatican organization.

With this note made, we are at the date of the announced ecstasy, June 18, 1965. It was produced, and I was an eyewitness.
    Fr. Ramon Andreau
    http://www.stjosephpublications.com/manuscripts_page.htm
It was reported in Fr. Ramon Andreu's diary that Conchita visited Pope Paul VI and some Vatican staff and revealed the date. I wanted to provide some additional documentation on the visit,so here it is:
In January of 1966, Conchita was called to Rome by Prefect of the Holy Office (now the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith), Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani and was interrogated for two and a half hours by the Cardinal and other members of the Holy Office. Although Conchita was experiencing doubts and lapses of memory at the time, which the Virgin had predicted, Conchita later said that during the interrogation everything about the apparitions passed before her eyes, as though “on film.” Cardinal Ottaviani was satisfied and the overall impression made by Conchita was favorable. Afterwards, she asked to see the Pope. Here is Father Joseph Pelletier’s account of that memorable meeting.
“She was given an appointment that was later cancelled. Arrangements were made for Conchita to meet a personal representative of the Pope, someone of considerable rank. He told her that the Pope gave her his blessing and with it that of all the Church. Quite unexpectedly, on the following day, the Holy Father himself actually received Conchita and repeated verbally what he had said to her the preceding day through his personal representative. These are incontrovertible facts, which the author is in position to substantiate if need be. What has been affirmed repeatedly and challenged just as often is true: the Pope did say: “I bless you and with me the whole Church blesses you.” -- Our Lady Comes to Garabandal, p. 201

Conchita’s meeting with the Holy Father was a private audience, in the strictest sense of the word, where only two or three persons are present as opposed to a semi-private one where several persons can be in attendance. Conchita was not permitted to divulge what was said during the meeting and has always honored this injunction even until today. She did reveal, however, that while in Rome, she told the date of the Miracle to both Cardinal Ottaviani and the Pope’s personal secretary (no doubt
    intended for the Pope).

18-10-1961: "Hay que hacer muchos sacrificios, mucha penitencia. Tenemos que visitar al Santísimo con frecuencia. Pero antes tenemos que ser buenos. Y si no lo hacemos nos vendrá un castigo."

Dr. Luis Morales changes mind on Garabandal

Dr. Luis Morales from Santander, a well known psychiatrist, had directed the investigations on Garabandal in 1961. In a conversation with the psychiatrist from Barcelona, Dr. Ricardo Puncernau, I found out that Dr. Morales had told him that he was interested in Garabandal and that he had changed his opinion about the apparitions. Before I went for my first visit with Bishop del Val, I asked Dr. Morales for an interview that was granted to me. You will be interested to know why he changed his attitude so drastically with the passing of the years.

In 1961, Dr. Luis Morales was appointed with a few others to investigate the events at Garabandal. The commission acted very superficially, interviewing the girls only a few times, and Dr. Morales, in a testimony of 136 words, declared that "The events at Garabandal are nothing more than a vulgar, hysterical exhibition."

On September 3, 1978, my first visit with Dr. Morales was recorded in its totality with his consent and lasted two hours. During the interview he was somewhat reserved in explaining his change of position on Garabandal and finally, because of my insistence, he said, "Now I see the existential reality of Our Lady in Garabandal. I think of Garabandal as Fatima: a gift of Divine Providence for humanity. Garabandal truly is a gift to us from Christ through his Mother..." At the end of the interview he answered my last question by saying, "Oh, yes! Garabandal has been a manifestation of Divine Grace...!"

A typed copy of this conversation was presented to Bishop del Val. He reacted with a mixture of surprise and satisfaction to the change of opinion of Dr. Morales.

    February 8, 1979, I had a second interview with
Dr. Morales and found him calm, happier and very open. In this friendly atmosphere he answered my pointed questions by saying that he accepted Garabandal as supernatural and that the messages came directly from God.

Then he told me how, a month before his wife died of cancer, he had borrowed from another cancer patient a crucifix kissed by the Virgin of Garabandal and presented it to his wife to kiss. Her pains disappeared and she remained with interior peace until the end. He also told me, with evident joy, that the patient from whom he'd borrowed the crucifix miraculously recovered completely from his cancer and now works in a bank.

This should be enough to illustrate to the reader the position of the Church on Garabandal. To understand the apparently long wait from the ecclesiastical authorities to pronounce a judgment on Garabandal it is convenient to remember that when the Fatima apparitions occurred in 1917 the Church never made a pronouncement until 1930, when the Bishop of Leiria made a short statement about them.

I was interested in all the saints who believed in Garabandal.

I was watching a film today on the life of St Faustina Kowalski (Divine Mercy) and there was a part of it were the Mother Superior of her Congregation and and her three advisors were debating Faustina's message from Jesus requesting that a Divine Mercy pisture be painted. The Mother Superior and two of the COnsultors wanted St Fautina and the whole message thing buried. Only one spoke up in her favour.

So they exiled Faustina in Vilnius were they hoped the whole Divine Mercy thing would be buried and forgotten poor Fuastina with it. However the Convent Mother Superior supported Faustina when she got there and she met Fr Sopoko who , more than anyone, spread the message.

It is such a mystery in cases like Garabandal how some folks can take to it like a duck to water and others splutter and sink.

So interesting. You see it over and over again in prophesy and messages. Yet in the end God's Will gets done , the bad gets sunk and the gold floats to the surface.

So I do not worry about Garabandal...and places like it, for, as the Arcangel Michael was fond of saying,

    'Who is like unto God?'
