I guess we have a Jewish president of Ukraine saying Christian sounding things for his western audience, and the baptized Russian Orthodox leader of Russia saying Christian things for his audience. Lots of words, hard to say who to believe. But Putin IS a baptized Christian. Zelensky is … not. But he is pro decadent woke western ideology, to which Putin is diametrically opposed.
It I hard to read the hearts of men. I love people who constantly think well of others, who try to think the best of everyone. St Therese of Liseaux used to say how beautiful it is to say good things about others, to always have the kind word. Jesus did warn us however that, Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will. enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who. does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Matthew 7:21 So that for instance during the Spanish Inquistion ,when clerics and others were torturing unfortunate Jews and others and burning them alive they were not doing the will of the Father. For God is Love and those who follow the Path of the Lord follow the Path of Love. President Putin has good eyes and sees the decadence and New Paganism of the West and in this he is right. But is the way to save the West, to save Russia and the World the path of war? Is that what Jesus truly wants? He is the Prince of Peace. I think viewing Putin as some kind of Good Knight riding on a white horse to save us all is a terrible mistake. Russia herself for instance is far from perfect. Perhaps better to munt a white horse to save Russia first might be a good idea. But no, I don't think God is calling Russia to war. I don't think the Prince of Peace is calling any of us to war.
If Russia wants to "save the West", by all means let it send Missionaries and Priests - not airplanes and bombs - to do that, bringing the Gospel and the Sacraments, Eucharistic Reverence, Marian Devotion etc. Orthodox Christianity is like 99% Catholic. They just have a few mistakes that could easily be corrected if they would re-unite with the Church, like on Filioque, Immaculate Conception etc; but if someone, from Protestantism, for e.g., goes to Orthodoxy, that would definitely be a big step up in the right direction; far more if it was from Atheism/Agnosticism'Liberalism or even Judaism/Islamism. I agree with Padraig. If Putin feels a genuine call to spread Orthodox Christianity to the West, then let his government do that by all means; but not in the way he is doing now, attacking and invading Ukraine, and threatening various western countries with annihilation or destruction. He is probably a flawed man, just like Donald Trump. That doesn't mean he can't do good things, for his country, like Trump did. If someone says he believes, Christ is Risen, and that Mother Mary, is the unconquerable Pillar of the Church, and Patron Saint of us all, I believe him. Zelensky could have run away to the west and enjoyed endless parties if he'd wanted to. He was offered that, but he declined. He didn't run away to save his life, as the Lord said was the mark of a true shepherd/leader. Instead, he stayed behind, to suffer with his people, and defend his country.
