Israel has every right to defend itself. Does it have the right to cause 2+ MN Civilians in Gaza, among whom are 1 MN children, to die, suffer or undergo forced displacement from their homes? Does it have the right to deprive Palestinians of basic needs like electricity, food and water? Is that Christian? Is it decent? Is it humane?

Wonder what Pope St. John Paul II the Great, who condemned the Iraq War, would think of this. Certainly seems to violate the "jus in bello" or Just Conduct during War principle of War. Thoughts?

Israel has already dropped more bombs on Gaza in six days than the U.S. dropped on Afghanistan in a single year. Now, the Israeli military is ordering over one million Palestinian civilians to flee their homes. This is genocide and ethnic cleansing.

The motions have been underway for days, as Israel has relentlessly bombed the Gaza Strip, one of the most densely populated places on earth.

On Friday, October 13, Palestinians in Gaza woke up to the news that the Israeli army was demanding that the more than 1.1 million Palestinians who live in the northern Gaza Strip “evacuate” to the southern part of the strip in the span of 24 hours.

Let that sink in. This is half of Gaza’s population. The northern part of Gaza includes Gaza City – the most densely populated area within the Gaza Strip. It also includes two of Gaza’s eight refugee camps, the Jabalia and al-Shati refugee camps. Both have been bombed over the past few days. Both are home to hundreds of thousands of refugees. They were made refugees by Israel, 75 years ago ..."

 

It is an extreme response to an extreme horrific inhuman attack. They want to get rid of Hamas. Unfortunately that is not an easy or clean operation. This is a bloodbath on all sides. Hamas is vile and demonic. Israelis are not Christian so Christian laws are not ingrained in them. Old Testament law is. An eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth. At least they are warning them to leave. That is more than Hamas did for the poor Israelis and tourists they massacred. But I too feel horrified at the human suffering I am witnessing. But if we ( the world) do not repent this suffering will come to all of us.

Why are Americans (not just here on MOG) but seemingly generally (and I know there are exceptions) but generally; sympathetic to Israel?

I think it is both all the bat shit crazy war monger establishment republican neo cons and the equally loony evangelicals who reject the catholic church and see the state of Israel as the fulfilment of the covenant. There is huge crossover between the two.

 

Its more than that. The Israel lobby is EXTREMELY powerful. Politicians treat them very carefully. But there are surprisingly many regular Americans who have had enough of their special status. I was shocked recently when friends said to us that Israel was basically the Evil Empire and all their sympathy was with Palestinians. This was long before this current horror.

 

The loony so called left are a different kettle of fish altogether. I would round them all up and drop them in Iran, afghanistan or some other sharia law slum and see how they get on. They are utterly clueless and deranged

 

Your friends are probably Catholics, I would guess. The Israel fervor is mainly Protestant (and mainly a Southern Baptist thing).

I grew up in North Carolina and the 'support Israel' fervor there is really quite astonishing. I think whenever they read their bibles and see "Israel" they think it's the same as referring to the modern state; and, since Jesus was Jewish, they also see any attack on Israel as an attack on Christ, which is peak irony.

Senator Graham unfortunately is a warmonger. I would not be surprised if the majority of his donors for re-election are "defense contractors." He was one of the senators who most encouraged and promoted the war in Ukraine. Lord, let your merciful love impact his heart!

Two reasons in my opinion

1) Zionism, or the idea that Jews have the right to their ancient homeland. The corollary to this is the belief that the Jews are still the chosen people of God - hence the misnomer JudeoChristian. In the US, Protestant evangelicals, baptists and other religions that believe dispensational theology have also embraced Zionism as a core value. A lot of these people are conservative, patriotic, pro-life, etc. Most practicing Catholics in the US have bought into Zionism as well.

2) Money. The Jews control all of the mainstream media and many politicians. I don't believe any president has been elected in many decades without the support of leading US Jewish organizations.

 

Actually they are not. And they are in the medical field. Very well off. Lovely people but dead set against Israel.
