On Wednesday at the little seaside Town where I attend Mass there is no priest so the same lady takes over, reading the Gospel, giving the homily, reading the prayers .

The last time I attended with her she made political references which left me seething. Her politics are her own and she us entitled to them But not during the homily in Church

After the service I heard two very angry women discussing this and saying they would not be back, would complain to the priest, that she was always dragging politics in etc etc etc.

Yesterday sure enough politics were dragged in again to her very very long homily. In fact the service lasted longer than the usual Mass I groaned Outlook at one point. Very loudly . But happily was hidden away in the cry Chapel on my own.

At the Eucharist this lady appeared to go into some king of deep prayer swoon state overcome by the Spirit.

    Unerving.

I wondered at one point what a Protestant visitor would have made of it all?

It seems to me that the whole thing was far more Protestant I form than any they might atte d themselves.

Thank goodness we don't have such goings on in the city

Was there really anything different from what this woman did to what an ordained Deacon might do?

She preached the Gospel and led the service

That sounds tortuous. I thought one must be ordained to give a homily?? where is the priest? Or deacon? Why do they have this lady doing this?

    I was thinking about this.

It seems weird , even by modern day standards.

I must check when I get home.

Apparently she can, according to the the Church Document, 'Worship of the Eucharist outside Mass'.

It requires the consent of the Bishop which I suppose was given.

A lay person can read when nopriest or deacon but absolutely cannot offer a reflection/ homily etc on the gospel as far as I am aware

They can but it must be short.

I have given up complaining, there is no point unless it suits someone's agenda.

Gay doesn't cut it anymore. However if you were gay, transexual, physically handicapped, an immigrant, poor, and non white, you would be an absolute superstar

I am maybe an old crank. But there was a funeral mass this morning and the priest said that the dead woman would...

'Live on in the memories of those who loved her'.

Well an Atheist or Agonostic could say as much . I could also say as much about a dead dog or a dead goldfish .

The Catholic, on the other hand believes the dead have an immortal soul which having died with Christ will Rise again to live with Him for all Eternity .

Also no word about the need for prayers for the dead .

But maybe I am a crank

The priest also talked about the successful life the dead woman had But no word about her Faith life. For instance did she ever go to Church?

I like to talk of dead people, not departed people Departed makes it seem like she has just popped out to buy a pint of milk
