After the election of Plutarco Elías Calles, a Freemason, to the presidency of Mexico, the practice of the Catholic faith was practically outlawed, with many priests and religious executed for being a Catholic priest or religious. Miguel Pro had to travel to several places, finally being ordained into the Jesuit Order. Knowing that it was a death sentence, he nevertheless returned to Mexico to tend to the needs of the faithful.

He was finally captured and executed on Nov. 23, 1927.

Here are two photos of his execution. As he was executed, his last words were, "Viva Cristo Rey!" ("Long Live Christ the King!") The officials invited all the press to witness and to take photos to show what happened to faithful Catholics. Instead, tens of thousands turned out for his funeral.

Truly, a model for our times.

Yes, Muzhik, Fr. Pro is a shining example for us, as was the whole Cristero uprising! We need to take heed and be inspired to defend the Faith in our day! I'll be away with family in Pennsylvania beginning Wednesday. I will begin with like-minded Catholics to discuss what concrete steps we can take jointly going forward, as the Cristero Movement did! I'll have to reflect on ideas that FatimaPilgrim mentioned.

    Viva Cristo Rey!
