Hello? Real quick, my parish priest told me at my last confession that it’s okay to receive Communion after a mortal sin if you have already made the resolve to go to confession the next time you are able to; is that true?
I remember learning somewhere as a child that you could receive Communion after a mortal sin if you made an Act of Perfect Contrition and resolved to go to Confession as soon as possible. But I have had trouble confirming this as an adult. I'd love to hear others' answers.
I also was told the same thing. If for example there is no confession time available between your motal sin and Sunday Mass you may make an act of Contrition and accept communion but you must go to confession as soon as something is available. Personally, I do not feel comfortable doing that myself.
I definitely do not feel comfortable about this. I would make a fervent act of Spiritual Communion instead.
Completely agree with you Carmel and HH. I would not be at peace receiving Holy Communion knowing I had committed mortal sin.
If it is true, I think the key part is you must make an Act of Perfect Contrition. An Act of Perfect Contrition with the intention of going to Confession as soon as possible restores sanctifying grace in the soul. It is said that truly perfect contrition is difficult to achieve.
RW, https://www.pillarcatholic.com/p/the-who-can-receive-holy-communion This article is the best I've seen. This article says something similar to your priest, but, is more stringent. “Anyone who is aware of having committed a mortal sin must not receive Holy Communion, even if he experiences deep contrition, without having first received sacramental absolution, unless he has a grave reason for receiving Communion and there is no possibility of going to confession,” the Catechism adds. The only example that comes to mind is I'm a Deacon and chaplain in the army. A seriously wounded Catholic is brought in from the battlefield. He shares that he recently committed a mortal sin, but there is no priest available to hear his confession. He is in danger of expiring, so after he makes a sincere act of contrition, I give him viaticum (Holy Communion). To be honest, I believe your well-meaning priest was a little loose in his interpretation, or you misunderstood? It is wonderful that you have such a longing and hunger for the Eucharist. God bless you! Be in the habit of making spiritual Holy Communions to help deepen your resolve to avoid mortal sins.
Do you not have to be in the state of grace to make a spiritual Communion same as physical Communion? That is my understanding and it makes sense to me that that would be the case. https://fssp.com/spiritual-communio...irst is that in,to make a Spiritual Communion.
Does this mean when we are without priests (during the hard tribulations) not only will we not receive physical communion it that we will also be deprived of a spiritual communion? Seems to me that we would not be able to maintain the full armor.
I did not know this, as I have probably never attempted to make an Act of Spiritual Communion unless I was in a state of grace. Thank you for clarification.
The Lord will be ever present and given such a dire situation we will have to daily call upon the Holy Spirit for the grace of fortitude and love. After all, the devil even now tempts faithful Catholics to give into grave sin "because one can go to Confession and be forgiven afterwards". Most Holy Queen, cover me in the protective Mantle of your Motherly care!
