I have decided, or chosen, to enter a form of religious life after a period of deepening of religious practices and self-purification (such as attending daily mass, etc) however I have 2 main and heavy problems which would bar me from considering (either an Order, lay brother etc) any sort of religious life. Chronic health condition (psychiatric even tho its under control), and very strict opposition from my close family. Can I pray my way out of this? I tried speaking, using discourse and rhetoric etc, to parents, psychiatric doctor (so he OKs to my family the fact of me going away for years), etc but my Speaking isnt any help. I have read a story about a special 2000 hail-Mary rosary being said for 3 sacred intentions sure to be answered. I feel a bit scheming performing religious devotion to be able to be more religious (in the order)..but maybe this is just the correct path to take?
Speak to a priest you trust about this. Ask God what his will is for you. You might also pray to Leonie Martin to help you. She was St Therese's youngest sister and struggled for years with mental health. It wasn't recognised back then, but she was probably autistic. St Benedict Labre is another who didn't become a professed religious but struggled with mental health. I think saying 'I have decided' is not yet sufficient. A period of discernment works both ways, the community has also to decide if a person has a vocation. Pray, and ask God to reveal his will for you.
Take this advice. Read (if you have not already done so) 'The Way of Divine Love' about the life and apparitions of Sr. Josefa Menendez. She had a very difficult entry into religious life and is a wonderful answerer of prayers. Read the book, talk to Sr. Josefa often then relax and leave it to her help. She shared your problem, she WILL provide an answer.
I'm with Steve. You can't go wrong with Sr Josefa and quite honestly The Way of Divine Love is the most powerful spiritual book I have ever read. I go back to it again and again.
I would advise taking an Iganatian Retreat under an experienced director for seven days. Explain to him that it is for discernment of vocation. Dont rush God . Give Him time and space.
thanks for the advice, everyone! I will give a space of time for myself to develop more, talk to all the people involved ,etc the outcome will be nice, no matter what the outcome is
We have some men, very good men, who would like to enter the monastery but can't. There are some conditions that can make life with a group very difficult, and unhealthy for the applicant. I will pray that this will work out for you. Whatever the outcome, you are still called to holiness, trust in God, and service to others as well. I have some good friends because of mental health issues can't enter, yet have a good relationship with us, and with me. Being Guest Master, I have the privilege of knowing them on a deep level. Their commitment to live out their faith, their endurance, and yes trust in God, puts me to shame. May God bless you and keep you. Peace Mark
