Someone was asking me to close this thread as it maybe does not fit in a spiritual forum, it being overtly policitcal. So I don't want to seem to come on heavy although I think it better closed, so I am opening it to a seven day poll, vote and you can decide for yourselves.:)

    The Poll is for 7 days;

For the record the person who asked for the thread to be closed was me..I don't want any member who has posted on the thread to start to try and guess who the person was and cause more discord..

I personally read a lot of the posts which made my head spin and also made me very sad when I seen very abusive reply's, I am all for a debate and infighting but when it is clear for me to see people being consumed by a particular thread and risk endangering their spirituality, then I feel I am duty bound to help that soul back on the right tracks.

If what you do does not start with God and end with God, well ????

I would agree with you on this...! I also think that the other political threads that are related to this election should also be closed, as the obvious conclusion if left open, would be that the debate would be only "relocated" to a different thread....thereby defeating the intention of ending the political discord.

I'd like to stick to Politics but not electioneering!! I think it's important to know who is most likely to support Life, Marriage=Man&Woman, Morals and Christian Principals and who is not. It's really not too hard these days! The Left = None of the Above  and on the Right ... who is the least worst :(
I don't think it matters on the National level anymore but each of us here can impact our State/Local & School Boards that are no longer reflecting the Will of the Christian Producer/Taxpayer Class.

    GOD SAVE ALL HERE!!

I think Americans get very heated over their politicians. And have to vent their frustrations. Although I have popped in one or two comments, I find the whole thing so intense. I tend to avoid the topic, and don't object to those who feel strongly about it getting their frustrations off their chest. I would vote yes, leave it open; but asking posters to be more charitable when expressing their views.
Maybe it could be renamed Mother of God latrine unless the tone is improved. I suppose humans will always need such a facility from time to time.

I believe we live in a contentious world, with battles on every front, especially this 2016 election. Most of the media promotes these divisions.....can't help it-we have choices to make. But on this forum, named after the Mother of God, I really do think we need to try to put forward a greater effort for civility with just a hint of virtue. OK, a lot more virtue.

I get just as opinionated and passionate as everyone else. But the folks at this site all have the biggest common denominator: our love for Our Lord, His Holy Mother, and our beloved Catholic Church.

I'm all for shutting down these election threads if we lose, even temporarily, our two main goals in this life. It's all about glorifying God and saving souls.

“My daughter, governments feel the ground missing under their feet. I will use all means to make them surrender, to make them come back to their senses, and to make them know that only from Me can they hope for true peace - and lasting peace. So, now I humiliate one, now another; now I make them become friends, now enemies. I will do all sorts of things to make them surrender; I will make their arms fall off; I will do things unexpected and unforeseen in order to confound them and make them comprehend the instability of human things and of themselves - to make them comprehend that God alone is the stable Being from whom they can hope for every good, and that if they want justice and peace, they must come to the fount of true justice and of true peace. Otherwise, they will achieve nothing, they will continue to struggle; and if it seems that they will combine, it will not be lasting, and the brawls will start again, more strongly. My daughter, the way things are, only my omnipotent finger can fix them; and at the appropriate time I will place it, but great trials are needed and will take place in the world. Therefore, it takes great patience.” Book of Heaven Vol. 12, Oct. 14, 1918

I have posted on that thread from time to time. I have also learned a little from it. Sometimes I enjoy it and sometimes I don't. Maybe it's unChristian, but mudslinging at politicians of any stripe is ok by me because it goes with the territory. I get a little uneasy when the debate gets personal between forum members. We're all Catholics trying to live our faith as best we can. So, if there could be some easing on the personal attacks I see no harm in keeping it open. At least it lets members blow off some steam at the politicians they don't like.

Incidentally, I have seen some posts on other threads where people who aren't on board with unapproved (by that I mean not yet determined by the Church to be worthy of belief) apparitions/revelations/locutions have been on the receiving end of unpleasant comments. A little tolerance of others goes a long way.

Focusing on politics causes me to lose peace faster than anything else.

As Julie pointed out, Americans get very passionate around elections. But this time is different. There is a bitter, angry edge, and I feel that it will come to blood in the streets this time.

I think it's a ploy of the enemy to get our attention on this brawl and away from our assignments. And I have to think the Blessed Mother is not happy seeing her children scrapping over these things.

I vote to ban political discussion on this forum.

I keep reading to keep an interest in what's going on in US politics because it is one to watch, but I have to confess that sometimes I have no idea what the posters are going on about. It maybe just me.

Politics is a huge distraction in our spiritual journey. Especially at this time. Only a few continue to argue the same dead end points and it's like kicking a dead horse.

There was a politican who was quoted on Face book today. What he said was so outrageous and uncharitable and hurtful I couldn't even get angry. I just went quiet. I was so angry I did not even want to respond in case I lost it.:D:D

Then suddenly I realised that the best response to so despicable a comment was total and aboslute silence . Not only not to respond but not even to think about him and his comment. Total silence. Blank.

After a while I managed to pray for him. Politics can be very, very trying to our inner peace. On the other hand if all Catholics withdrew from politics we would be in a far worse state. But I am so glad I am not involved in politics anymore and take no great interest.

Has anyone heard of a modern poltiican who was maybe a saint?

    Just curious.

Political opinions are like belly buttons, everybody's got one....I don't care what others think....I am reading and forming my own opinion but mostly praying....lots of praying. I don't need to read about the US presidential election here at MOG if anyone cares for me to cast my vote. I wouldn't miss it....

Yes, Sister, I had thought of him. But he was not a politician but a Head of State. Someone who inherited his role rather than won it as a politician. He was De Facto non political in his role and in the way he got it. He was kind of above poilitics.

Or according to the Belgium Constitution non political. Not as in America were a President would, naturally, be a politician. He was a King , he never had to look for votes.

It's true. We have also Blessed Karl of Austria, Emperor, and quite a number of Kings Saints. But certainly they didn't set by themselves on the path seeking votes.

Hi Padraig, I voted for keeping the political thread going, but wish some would express themselves with less paragraphs. And if we do close, can you please close the "not Trump..." thread too?

I'm for shutting all political threads down at this point. I don't mind the debate and I do believe the political climate at this moment, is a "sign of the times" within itself and worthy of discussion. However, I have been blown back by the lack of charity and the uncalled for personal attacks on those threads. That kind of behavior is not appropriate for this type of forum.

Maybe there is a different reason for shutting the thread.. If I asked you the question " would you shut the thread if you felt that a soul was being consumed by the election debate and had completely strayed from their faith" what would you answer be ????
